The new president at the University of Texas at Austin is poised to make $1.25 million a year, a jump of $350,000 or 40% more than his predecessor, Greg Fenves. Fenves originally turned down a $1 million salary when offered the top job at UT-Austin in 2015. In June, the board approved an annual salary of $795,000 for Hartzell as interim president. The $1.25 million salary is “all-inclusive,” and he will not receive additional stipends for housing, an automobile or cell phone.

Hartzell, dean of UT-Austins business school, was named interim president in April after former President Greg Fenves announced his departure. In 2018, Fenves earned $762,220 as UT-Austin's president. "I'm very proud of President Hartzell at UT-Austin and all of our presidents for listening closely to their students, alumni, staff, and supporters," Chariman Kevin Eltife said.
