Under a settlement reached between the Texas Attorney General's Office and Griddy Energy, customers have been released from all outstanding debts incurred during Winter Storm Uri.

Time is running out on a slate of other bills lawmakers are considering that stem from February's deadly winter storm.

The company that drew attention after sending huge electricity bills to customers after last month’s blackout-causing winter storm in Texas has filed for bankruptcy protection. Its rates skyrocketed during the February deep freeze, when state grid operators raised wholesale prices. The company blamed its situation on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the power grid in most of the state. Griddy’s bankruptcy plan proposes to waive claims against customers for charges they incurred from Feb. 15 through Feb. 19, while the $9,000 per megawatt hour price for wholesale power was in effect. Griddy is the third company to seek bankruptcy protection due to the storm, after Brazos Electric Power Cooperative Inc. and Canadian natural gas provider Just Energy Group.

A Chambers County resident filed a class-action lawsuit against electricity retailer Griddy on Monday, accusing the provider of price gouging customers during last week’s freeze. Griddy drafted payments from Khoury’s bank account several times, according to the lawsuit, pulling $1,200 before she blocked further charges from her bank. AdGriddy passes wholesale electricity rates directly to customers, who in turn pay the company $10 a month. While electricity bills are likely to rise across the board, Texans on variable rate plans faced immediate and alarmingly high prices. Griddy warned its 29,000 customers last week of impending price hikes and encouraged them to seek out other electric providers.
