In the land of Cowboys and Indians, there is a concerted effort to bring growth to their shared neighborhood.

Harlandale-McCollum is a neighborhood rooted in rivalry and pride in the South Side. Generations of neighbors have asked, and answered, variations of the same question: Harlandale or McCollum? Indians or Cowboys? There’s a physical divide between the two sides of this neighborhood but also an effort to unite them, especially in times of need.

More than 30 years after they lined up across the field from each other in the Frontier Bowl, two former rivals talk about the 1989 classic. Joseph Farias was and still is a Harlandale Indian; Gabe Cisneros was and still is a McCollum Cowboy. They were from different sides of the McCollum-Harlandale neighborhood. Fate and football brought them together, along with a chance to sit and talk about those old glory days and the community they grew up in.

This episode of Know My Neighborhood looks into this special neighborhood where past and present come together with some fear about the future.

A man accused of shooting and killing a 14-year-old boy near Harlandale High School in 2020 was arrested following a standoff with San Antonio police.

The Fin Addict Angler Foundation was created and resides on the South Side of San Antonio. A Harlandale High School freshman pulled from class last week to be interviewed by Child Protective Services investigators was not the correct student they were looking for, district officials confirmed this week.

SAN ANTONIO – Harlandale High School has shutdown both of its varsity and junior varsity football teams for the next three weeks following a positive coronavirus test, Harlandale Independent School District officials announced Thursday. Additionally, football practices at Harlandale High School cannot resume until Nov. 20. Junior varsity games will be allowed to continue on Nov. 26, and varsity games will resume on Nov. 27, according to the district’s announcement. Veterans Memorial has also been forced to cancel its next two games. The first game was scheduled for Friday night against Buda Johnson in Buda, and the other was scheduled for next Thursday against Dripping Springs.

Jeffrey Martínez said his dream began at a very young age and was accomplished in the fall of 2013, however, Martínez said something was still missing. “Literally, I graduated college on a Saturday, and I started teaching (at Harlandale High School) that Tuesday right after,” Martínez said. Martínez is a high school math teacher. “I sponsored the class of 2016 at Harlandale,” Martínez said. “Only one other person has received their Masters, and she was also a math teacher and a high school counselor.

SAN ANTONIO – A 15-year-old has been arrested on murder charges in connection with a man who was found dead under a bridge near Harlandale High School on Tuesday. Police told KSAT the man was found dead around 4:20 p.m. in the 100 block of Rosebud Lane. SAPD report says the man found dead under bridge was murderedIt remains unclear if the victim and the teen knew each other, or if the teen is a student at the high school. A previous report from San Antonio Police said a man and woman were taken in for questioning Tuesday when the body was discovered. The teen has been taken to the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center, a spokesperson with San Antonio Police Department confirmed to KSAT.

I enjoy the high value placed on tradition throughout the Harlandale district. it would be the ability to fly, so I would be able to travel the world as I please.
