Jay-Z’s electrifying reunion with Alicia Keys on what appeared to be a live duet of “Empire State of Mind” at the Tony Awards was actually pre-taped, a show official who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly told The Associated Press.

The Tonys are often the most entertaining of awards shows, with Broadway performers showing their best work.

Two Broadway shows celebrating the origins of sonic creativity — the musical “Hell’s Kitchen” fueled by Alicia Keys songs, and the play “Stereophonic” about a ’70s rock band at the edge of stardom — each earned a leading 13 Tony Award nominations Tuesday.

Broadway audiences will soon be hearing the hit songs of Alicia Keys not far from where the multiple-Grammy-winner grew up.
