SAN ANTONIO A coastal destination has closed ahead of Labor Day weekend due to debris littered across the beach following Hurricane Hanna. Nueces County on Wednesday issued an order for the temporary closure of the beach near Bob Hall Pier, which sustained significant damage during the July 25 storm. As the Category 1 storm struck south of Corpus Christi that day, its wind and waves caused the end of the pier to collapse. Beach access from the northern edge to the southern edge of the parking lot will remain closed as the Texas General Land Office removes debris. The order is in effect until Oct. 2 unless shortened, lengthened or amended.

Additional campgrounds at the Padre Island National Seashore will reopen on Friday after being closed for months. The national seashore on Wednesday announced both Malaquite and Bird Island Basin campgrounds will reopen on a first-come, first-serve basis. The overnight fees for Malaquite Beach will be $14, and the overnight fees for Bird Island will be $8 per night. Over the summer, the shoreline at Bird Island Basin was stabilized due to damage from Hurricane Harvey, and water lines and a lift station were repaired at Malaquite Beach. The park previously allowed primitive camping on North and South beaches and overnight parking at the Bird Island Basin boat ramp following Hurricane Hanna.

The mayor of Galveston called for a mandatory evacuation of the city Tuesday morning after Tropical Storm Laura strengthened into a hurricane and its path shifted westward, increasing the chances that it could strike the Houston area. Galveston residents have until Wednesday morning to evacuate, but city services will be suspended Tuesday at noon, according to a city Facebook post. Voluntary evacuation orders are in place for Chambers County, Galveston County and the City of Seabrook. Laura is bearing down as the coronavirus pandemic remains a major concern in Texas, especially in cities like Houston. Laura could become the second significant storm to impact Texas during the 2020 hurricane season.

SAN ANTONIO The majority of Padre Island National Seashore will reopen on Thursday after being closed due to damage from Hurricane Hanna. Both north and south beaches, as well as Malaquite Beach, the Bird Island Basin day-use area and boat ramp, will open at 6 a.m., according to the park. At this time, developed campgrounds at Malaquite and Bird Island Basin will remain closed. Primitive camping on both north and south beaches, however, will be allowed. The park says the dock at the Bird Island boat ramp is in the process of being rebuilt.

For months, lawmakers have criticized the $295 million deal with Frisco-based MTX Group, arguing it was inked too quickly, without an opportunity for the Legislature to properly vet it. Under state emergency laws, triggered by a March 13 disaster declaration from Abbott, state officials have broader authority than usual to make policy decisions. But in this case, the lawsuit argues, officials went too far and failed to ensure proper competitive bidding as required by law. After a survey, The National Weather Service in New Braunfels has determined that damage in Wilson County was the result of a tornado. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down along Highway 87 around 5:10 Sunday morning, 2 miles northwest of Sutherland Springs. Damage patterns revealed the tornado to be a weak EF0, with winds up to 70 mph. Wilson County tornado trackThe tornado developed within an outer band of Hurricane Hanna. Texas Damage from Hurricane Hanna has caused Padre Island National Seashore to close until further notice. Greg Abbott today announced Sunday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and President Donald Trump have granted an emergency declaration request in the wake of damage caused by Hurricane Hanna. FEMA is authorized to provide reimbursement for mass care, evacuation and shelter support at 75% federal funding. Abbott submitted the request Saturday. CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The city of San Antonio will be assisting the state in its response to Hurricane Hanna, as announced by Governor Greg Abbott. Hurricane Hanna is expected to make landfall Saturday and is categorized as a Category 1 hurricane. San Antonio’s Freeman Coliseum will serve as a reception center for hurricane evacuees. The hurricane is expected to bring severe and flash flooding, strong winds and could produce tornadoes in the area, according to Abbott. On Saturday afternoon, one tornado warning was already issued north and northeast of Corpus Christi, according to Abbott.

PORT MANSFIELD, Texas – Due to Hurricane Hanna’s expected landfall on Saturday, the Port Mansfield Police Department is urging residents, tourists and business owners to evacuate the area as soon as possible. Hurricane Hanna is moving west at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph as of 7AM Saturday morning. Rainfall totals through the weekend will be higher well south of San Antonio in deep South Texas, where the center of Hurricane Hanna will make landfall. The heaviest of rain associated with Hanna will be well south of San Antonio, near Corpus Christi and the Rio Grand Valley.
