SAN ANTONIO – We’re already a month into the much-awaited 2021 - even if you had a good 2020 there was a general consensus that people were happy to bid it adieu. So far, 2021 has ushered in a new president and made history with the first female vice president, among other things. With the excitement of a new year starting to fade and Inauguration Day having come and gone, there are some things we can look forward to for February in and around San Antonio. Here’s a list of some of the things going on in the San Antonio-area in February that we are excited about:

Lloyd Doggett to be played in a university-sponsored program. Below is a draft of the program schedule, provided to KSAT by Doggett’s office:Draft schedule of Texas State event. At the end of the video, he urges students at Texas State to engage with him with what they think of the future. The request for the Congressman’s video and the decision to not include the video in the inauguration program was made deep in the university organization without following university policy. He frequently speaks at our new student convocation, welcoming freshmen to Texas State and encouraging them to be involved in the civic process.

Members of Vice President Kamala Harris’ beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., are sounding off on the night of her historic inauguration, speaking about the historic moment and its impact on the future. “It’s absolutely amazing,” said Jackie Gorman, who is the current president of the local Alpha Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “I am just beyond proud.”Gorman says seeing her sorority sister, now Vice President Kamala Harris, who joined Howard University’s Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in the spring of 1986, as the first person of color and woman to take the oath of office, symbolizes a dream realized for her sorority sisters. “If you can imagine that Alpha Kappa Alpha was started by women who were one generation removed from slavery,” Gorman said. Gorman said.”Fellow AKA Shalonda Davis says she noticed leadership qualities in Harris when they met at a sorority conference years ago. The “sorors” say the vice president’s representation is renewed proof that anything is possible, regardless of race or gender.

Biden took the oath at a U.S. Capitol that had been battered by an insurrectionist siege just two weeks earlier. Instead, Biden gazed out over 200,000 American flags planted on the National Mall to symbolize those who could not attend in person. Inauguration Day is historic for obvious reasons and Wednesday promises to be no different. That falls in between some of the extremes seen on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. It’s also fair to say that weather has had a big impact on the historic event. The first inauguration held outside occurred in 1817 when President James Monroe was sworn into office. WASHINGTON – President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will include a “virtual parade across America” consistent with crowd limits during the coronavirus era, organizers announced Sunday. Those are military traditions where Biden will review the readiness of military troops. Biden will also receive a traditional presidential escort with representatives from every branch of the military from 15th Street in Washington to the White House. Accordingly, organizers also said they will hold a virtual parade nationwide to “celebrate America’s heroes, highlight Americans from all walks of life in different states and regions, and reflect on the diversity, heritage, and resilience of the country as we begin a new American era.”The parade event will be televised and feature “diverse, dynamic” performances in communities across the country, the inaugural committee promised. “We are excited about the possibilities and opportunities this moment presents to allow all Americans to participate in our country’s sacred inaugural traditions," said Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Maju Varghese said in a statement.

SAN ANTONIO – Hours of detail and hard work will be displayed on the national stage Inauguration Day on January 20th. The San Antonio small business Dixie Flag & Banner Co. was once again chosen by the White House to seam pieces of fabric that symbolize the nation’s history. Vanessa Van de Putte, President and CEO of Dixie Flag & Banner Co. said it’s an order they’ve received during the past five presidential inaugurations. “This will be our sixth inauguration,” Van de Putte said. The team at Dixie Flag is eager to see their work displayed on the national stage behind President-elect Joe Biden on Inauguration Day.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican, says he is leaving the telecommunications regulator on Inauguration Day. Section 230 shields internet companies from lawsuits about posts by users. The Trump administration has gone after the law, alleging with no evidence that social networks censor conservatives. Pai and another Republican commissioner, Michael O'Rielly, are leaving the agency. O'Rielly is leaving because the White House pulled his nomination after he said he wasn't sure the agency had authority on Section 230.

Even if the election is messy and contested in court, the country will have a president on Inauguration Day. But states' electoral votes have to be cast on Dec. 14. When the electors meet, the candidate who gets at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes wins. But what happens if election issues still prevent a winner from being named? In a contingent election, House members have to choose among the three people with the most electoral votes.
