SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County inmate has died shortly after suffering a stroke while in an area hospital, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar. Inmate Gerald Irey, 71, was sent to University Hospital on Feb. 8, and was then taken to a secure part of the hospital on Feb. 9, according to Sheriff Salazar. Ivey had an “altered mental status,” according to the BCSO and in the last couple of days, Irey suffered a stroke. Shortly after, he was then admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, according to Salazar. As of around 9:35 a.m., Sunday, Sheriff Salazar said he was notified that Irey had died at the hospital.

SAN ANTONIO – A 45-year-old Bexar County Jail inmate died Monday from apparent COVID-19 complications, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said. According to a news release, Munoz notified jail staff on Jan. 2 that he was experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. The inmate was tested for COVID-19 and was quarantined pending test results. After receiving confirmation later that day of positive results for the virus, Munoz was relocated to the jail infirmary for medical observation and treatment for COVID-19. Munoz was taken to University Hospital on Wednesday after experiencing COVID-19 complications, the news release said.

SAN ANTONIO – The death of a 45-year-old inmate at the Bexar County Jail is under investigation, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday morning. Around 4:37 a.m., a sheriff’s detention deputy discovered the inmate, who was found unresponsive inside of his cell during face-to-face observation checks. Around 7:09 p.m., a detention deputy found the inmate in a cell attempting suicide during an observation check. Other deputies and medical staff responded and attempted to save the 53-year-old inmate’s life, the sheriff’s office said. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Internal Affairs, and the Public Integrity Unit will investigate the death, as per standard protocol.

SAN ANTONIO – An inmate was hospitalized after a suicide attempt at the county jail, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported. A detention deputy at the Bexar County Jail, while conducting face-to-face observation checks around 3:13 p.m. on Tuesday, stopped the 42-year-old inmate from killing himself. Officials say the deputy entered the cell, used a cutting tool to save the inmate and called for backup. More deputies and jail medical staff rushed to help save the inmate. The sheriff’s office said the inmate was later responsive and speaking with medical staff members.

SAN ANTONIO – A 47-year-old male inmate from the Bexar County Jail is in critical condition after an attempted suicide, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said. Officials said a detention deputy was conducting observation checks around 3:09 p.m. Monday when they saw the inmate attempting to die by suicide. The deputy cut used a suicide prevention cutting tool and began performing lifesaving measures to try to save the inmate, officials said. SAN ANTONIO A 34-year-old Bexar County Jail inmate has died after he was hospitalized for ingesting drugs. Julian Dena died at Baptist Medical Center on Thursday afternoon after his family decided to take him off life support, Bexar County Sheriffs Office officials said. Dena was being booked into the jail Monday when a deputy searching the inmate found him chewing on a substance that was later determined to be methamphetamine. The sheriffs office said Denas death will be investigated as a custodial death. As per standard procedure, the Bexar County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Internal Affairs (IA), and the Public Integrity Unit (PIU) are conducting an investigation into this death, the sheriffs office said in a news release.

Health officials are working to determine how an inmate who has been in the Dallas County jail since late December contracted the coronavirus, the sheriff said Wednesday. Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown said the positive test for the inmate who is in his 40s was confirmed early Wednesday morning. It is the first known case of the virus in an inmate at the jail. The man was housed in a shared pod with about 50 other inmates, the sheriff said. Brown said employees who had contact with the man who contracted the virus are being asked to self-quarantine.

A 72-year-old male inmate who died early Monday morning at the Bexar County Jail has been identified. The inmate was identified as David Alan Watts, who was jailed on a charge of indecency with a child-contact, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said. Around 2:24 a.m., deputies and medical staff responded after Watts experienced an apparent medical episode within the detention center, officials said. A definitive cause of death will be determined by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. As per standard procedure, the BCSO Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Internal Affairs, and the Public Integrity Unit are conducting an investigation into the death, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.
