Jalen McKee-Rodriguez defeated incumbent Jada Andrews-Sullivan in the race for District 2 runoff on Saturday night, becoming the first openly gay man to be elected to the San Antonio City Council.

Jalen McKee-Rodriguez tweeted on Tuesday that, “There are pastors and church leaders telling their congregants that a vote for me is a sin... and the Councilwoman is enabling that rhetoric and behavior because she benefits from it.”

Half of the San Antonio City Council races are headed for a June 5 runoff election, including District 2 on the East Side.

Incumbent Andrews-Sullivan, McKee-Rodriguez to go head-to-head in District 2 runoff election

Coming off of her first term, District 2 Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan has 11 challengers looking to unseat her, more than twice as many as any other incumbent, with the exception of the always crowded mayor’s race.

Here are the key races we’re watching on May 1.

With several crowded races on the ballot — more than 80 candidates are running for 11 seats — hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and expenditures have run through local campaigns.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio municipal election is slated for May 1, the first Saturday in May. We’ve collected everything you need to know about voting in the 2021 city election below. San Antonio MayorIn the race for San Antonio mayor, incumbent Ron Nirenberg and former city councilman Greg Brockhouse headline a 14-candidate field. Brockhouse was elected to City Council in 2017 and has served in several senior roles for other City Council members.

SAN ANTONIO – Residents of District 2 say they are fed up with violence plaguing the streets on the East Side and are desperate for change after a child was shot at a church event Sunday at the Greater Faith Institutional Church. “This violence is pitiful,” said Germaine Carson, an East Side resident. “People don’t have anything to do but violence, which is why it continues to give this side of town a negative look. They just need to be heard.”White said violence such as Sunday’s shooting could have lasting effects. “SAPD officers are concerned and concerned that they are working off a checklist here in our district,” Andrews-Sullivan said.

SAN ANTONIO – Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan has filed for re-election in District Two. On Sunday, Andrews-Sullivan issued a statement on Sunday, in regards to her candidacy:“Now is the time that we build even stronger, more united, working in harmony for the greater good. That’s what re-election means for our district,” the statement reads. Andrews-Sullivan won the general runoff election in 2019. SAN ANTONIO – Residents in an east San Antonio neighborhood say they’re concerned after a neighbor was shot and killed in his home. San Antonio police say friends of Michael Broadus, 62, found his body inside his home at Belmont Street and North Gervers Street on Tuesday. Officers say Broadus was shot twice. “What I’m seeing, I’m scared for my grandkids. I’m scared, to tell you the truth,” Ibarra said.

SAN ANTONIO – The city’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission on Wednesday is expected to give details on next year’s MLK march, which will take place virtually instead of in-person due to the pandemic. Mayor Ron Nirenberg, interim commission chair Renee Watson and District 2 Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan will make the announcement at 11:15 a.m. It has been held every year in San Antonio since Jan. 19, 1987. The commission initially said the virtual event could include a 2-hour feature of speakers, entertainment and scholarship receptions. SAN ANTONIO – Declaring racism a public health crisis in August was an important move for the City of San Antonio as people of color make up more than 75% of the city’s population. Tramelle Jones has lived in San Antonio for more than 30 years and is among those who believe the time for action is now. The resolution passed by the San Antonio City Council doesn’t make immediate changes or specify how they will be made. Another resident, Glo Armmer, has lived in San Antonio her whole life. “We know that racism has an impact on individual health for certain, and when you think collectively, it’s public health,” she said.

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio mother believes she and her two daughters are living in a danger zone. The shooting happened near Bookertee Road and Martin Luther King Drive on Thursday, when she heard a noise. The woman rushed out of the area and parked at a nearby H-E-B store where she asked for help. “Who expects to get shot at stop sign just waiting to turn?”The shooting happened down the street from where the family lives. San Antonio police believe the shots fired came from another vehicle, but the investigation is still underway.

SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio City Council will discuss possible bans on police use of neck restraints and no-knock warrants amid nationwide calls for police reform. Outside of that, the chief said an officer would be in violation of department policy and could face administrative and criminal problems. The department suspended its no-knock policy in June, and no warrants have been issued since, he said. The department is currently finalizing a new policy, the chief said, that would ban the use of no-knock warrants for search warrants across the board. No-knock warrants for arrests would only be allowed in exigent circumstances (that) pose a serious threat to the safety of the officer or members of the public, he said.

SAN ANTONIO The Black Lives Matter movement has shed light on deep-rooted racial and economic disparities throughout the country, including the differences in opportunities realized in historically underserved, predominantly minority communities compared to affluent neighborhoods. The issue of economic segregation and redlining as it pertains to an area thats been underserved ... undeveloped, Andrews-Sullivan said. Even if its producing the markets and the community markets and community stores that we need, Andrews-Sullivan said. Andrews-Sullivan said she also wants to make sure small business owners in the area are financially literate, so they know how to access available funding. If all goes as planned, new resources could be provided to District 2 as early as next year.

SAN ANTONIO La-Tieka Sims has always been involved in student government at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. She was the student body president, president of the Student Government Association and also the treasurer of the Delta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. Long term, I want to run for office, said La-Tieka Sims, Texas A&M University San Antonio graduate. I really want to push for women and especially women of color, said Sims. It baffles me sometimes about how long it has taken for even our city council to look the way it looks.

SAN ANTONIO For the fifth day in a row, San Antonio activists and community members have been marching the streets of downtown demanding change after the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. So, what can be done for change to come for San Antonio? Weve had incidents here in San Antonio, and they werent as widely or worldly broadcast, she said. Even amidst the current situation, the city attorney and city leaders were not ready to say what, if any changes, might be made to the CBA. Theres still time to work with the council, work with the community on that.Mayor Ron Nirenberg said that change is complex.

SAN ANTONIO – For the second time in San Antonio history, women will be the majority on the City Council. The newly elected female members said they are looking forward to being a part of the new council and serving their communities. "Having a majority women's council speaks to the thought process to what the city of San Antonio is looking for," said Jada Andrews-Sullivan, who was elected to represent District 2. Some of the veteran women council members are also excited about the change. So, it should be a majority female on the San Antonio City Council, and I'm very proud that they're all women of color.
