The district is heavily Democratic, so the primary winner is virtually assured of victory in the general election in November.

With potentially as much as 50% of the vote being cast by mail this year because of the coronavirus, absentee ballots could decide the primary election. The most closely watched contest in New York is the one involving Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
