The Baltimore City Council has voted to confirm Richard Worley as the city's new police commissioner.

Two Baltimore city detectives were shot and a homicide suspect was killed while a U.S. Marshals' task force attempted to served a warrant outside a shopping mall.

The figures, which are provisional, are contained in a report covering the first half of the six-month pilot program. Ohio-based Persistent Surveillance Systems is operating the surveillance technology and analyzing the images for police. The report shows the city saw a combination of 778 homicides, shootings, armed robberies and carjackings between May 1 and July 31. Aerial images were analyzed for 81 of the cases, of which 17 — or 21% — were “provisionally closed” with an arrest. The report also states that of the 697 cases for which aerial surveillance was not analyzed, 113 — or 16% — were “provisionally closed” with an arrest.

– A shooting at a Baltimore apartment complex Wednesday ended with the death of a former state corrections official who had been under investigation and the wounding of two fugitive task force officers, authorities said. Neighbors at the scene of the shooting in the city’s Frankford neighborhood told The Baltimore Sun that a suspect was “shooting back” at officers. He said the task force officers were going after “a really bad guy.” Hogan did not release the suspect's identity or any other details. Months earlier, the department unveiled a task force focused on gun- and drug-related crime in the city. The task force to which the wounded officers belong also includes Secret Service agents.
