(Polk County Jail via AP)IOWA CITY, Iowa – Prosecutors have added five felony weapons and assault counts against a white man already charged with attempted murder for shooting into a car carrying four Black girls during a rally for President Donald Trump in Iowa. At a state government parking lot, an angry confrontation broke out between the Black teenagers and a much larger group of Trump supporters. The bullet struck the leg of a 15-year-old girl in the passenger seat who was arguing with Trump supporters through the sunroof. McKinney, an Army veteran and former Iowa National Guard member, told police that he fired in self-defense after the girls' vehicle reversed and struck a Trump supporter's pickup truck.

A resident of tiny St. Charles, Iowa, McKinney has posted on Facebook in support of the far-right Proud Boys and against Black Lives Matter. In a news release detailing McKinney’s arrest, the state police described an afternoon shooting at a parking lot and didn't mention the Trump car rally or the race of those involved. The teen driver’s mother said the girls argued with Trump supporters about politics and were subjected to racial slurs. The girls’ car ended up surrounded by Trump supporters who were yelling and honking horns before the driver went in reverse and struck a pickup. Trump supporters have blasted authorities for charging McKinney, arguing that his shot protected rallygoers.
