The new president at the University of Texas at Austin is poised to make $1.25 million a year, a jump of $350,000 or 40% more than his predecessor, Greg Fenves. Fenves originally turned down a $1 million salary when offered the top job at UT-Austin in 2015. In June, the board approved an annual salary of $795,000 for Hartzell as interim president. The $1.25 million salary is āall-inclusive,ā and he will not receive additional stipends for housing, an automobile or cell phone.

The county hired Young in 2015 to head the Bexar County Public Defenderās Office, which was created in 2005. Young has been a prosecutor in the Rio Grande Valley and served as a federal public defender. She is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and a member of the Houseās first Criminal Justice Reform Caucus.

Those task forces will ultimately make a recommendation on how best to address concerns about Sul Ross and other monuments, Young said. A&M System Chancellor John Sharp previously opposed removing the statue, then later said that he supported the task forces' review. "While my personal opinion has not changed about the importance of Lawrence Sullivan Ross to Texas A&M, we Aggies must stand united against racism and love one another," Sharp's statement said.

Mark Benavides is currently serving an 80-year prison term after he was convicted in 2018 of trading sex for legal services from women he was representing. Officials said the women were extorted by Benavides to take plea deals for crimes they didnt commit. When you drill down deeper and what weve seen in the cases, its actually extortion, said lead Bexar County Public Defender Michael Young. The statue commemorates Lawrence Sullivan Ross, a Confederate general and former Texas governor that students at Texas A&Ms College Station flagship have zeroed in on as the campus' most flagrant reminder of systemic racism. "Earlier today I met with Chancellor John Sharp to discuss continued racism on the Texas A&M campus," Young wrote in a letter. Young said he would ask this group to make a recommendation for Ross' statue in the near future.
