A Texas woman accused of killing a woman to steal her unborn baby to present as her own went on trial for capital murder.

Police in far East Texas arrested a man who kept the skeletal remains of his son — who died in 2018 — in his kitchen, authorities said.

NEW BOSTON, Texas – A baby was removed from the womb of a 21-year-old woman found dead in a small East Texas city, authorities said. The body of Reagan Simmons Hancock was discovered Friday morning in a home in New Boston, a city of about 4,600 people located 160 miles northeast of Dallas, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. New Boston police have said that a woman was later taken into custody by Oklahoma authorities and the baby did not survive. KSLA News, a TV station in Shreveport, Louisiana, said the woman took the child to a hospital in Isabel, Oklahoma, where the baby died. Police said the Texas Rangers are investigating.

A pregnant woman in East Texas has died after her unborn child was cut from her womb, according to police. The baby did not survive after a female suspect stole the child, police said. The 22-year-old woman was nearly eight months pregnant, according to a report from the Texarkana Gazette. Police on Saturday said a female suspect was taken into custody in Oklahoma. Police said the Texas Rangers are now investigating, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

As of Monday, TDCJ has completed more than 100,000 coronavirus tests on state prisoners, according to prison data. The state prison system stopped intake of people in county jails who had been sentenced to prison in April, after at least 10 county jails reported the virus in their lockups and Texas prisons had nearly 200 cases. By halting intake from counties, the state prison population dropped from about 140,000 inmates in March to about 131,000 in May, according to state reports. In May, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office asked the state for $468,000 to reimburse jail costs for holding TDCJ-ready inmates, according to KSAT.
