This week’s new streaming entertainment releases include a new album from pop princess Ariana Grande, a docuseries on National Geographic that follows female leaders of the animal kingdom and the Emma Stone-led “Poor Things” landing on Hulu, just in time for the Academy Awards.

Hollywood closed out an up and down 2023 with “Wonka” regaining No. 1 at the box office, strong sales for “The Color Purple” and an overall $9 billion in ticket sales that improved on 2022’s grosses but fell about $2 billion shy of pre-pandemic norms.

“Wonka” debuted with $39 million in box office sales in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend.

Like the “Paddington” movies, “Wonka” was dreamt up by Paul King, a lifetime Roald Dahl fan and a writer and director whom his collaborators somewhat universally agree may actually be Paddington in a human costume.

Before Charlie could walk into the chocolate factory, Willy Wonka, played by Timothée Chalamet, went on a quest to create the perfect chocolate. The latest prequel shows the origin story of the infamous character and those who helped him along the way, including Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa.

Baylor remained No. 1 for the third straight week in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll, receiving all 61 first-place votes from a national media panel.

Timothée Chalamet will play Willy Wonka in a musical based on the early life of the eccentric chocolatier.
