Referred to as a “green corridor” the proposed project would connect Barton Springs, San Marcos Springs, Comal Springs, and San Antonio Springs. Nobody needs [the trails] more right now than Austin to San Antonio,” according to San Antonio Report. So, before the Great Springs Project can officially break ground, officials need permission from landowners, secured partnerships with local and national parks and funding. The 86-year-old received care at a local hospital but has since been released and is recovering at home. “We appreciate the community’s thoughts and prayers as he recovers,” said a spokesperson for the Phil Hardberger Conservancy. The former mayor underwent a procedure in 2013 to correct a clogged artery. Hardberger was mayor from 2005 to 2009.

The land bridge will also feature an elevated walkway that should be completed later this month. The native plants and trees will continue to grow, changing the look of the land bridge over the years. The $23 million project was paid for with proceeds from the 2017 bond and fundraising through the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy. Bikes are allowed in the park, but cyclists are asked to walk their bikes across the new land bridge for safety.

Their letter comes as the City Council discusses the future of the Alamo Plan now that the controversial relocation of the Cenotaph, a central part of the plan, has been blocked by the Texas Historical Commission. The current Alamo Plan, which the city council approved in October 2018, includes the City of San Antonio, the Texas General Land Office, and the Alamo Trust as its partners. It involves renovating Alamo Plaza, closing down portions of several streets, and creating a museum and visitor center located around the Woolworth and Crockett buildings.
