Rebecca Viagran has her eyes on Texas’s 35th Congressional District, according to two sources, including one close to her. Though she did not definitively confirm her plans, Viagran told KSAT she is “seriously considering” running for the seat as a Democrat and is “looking forward to making an announcement on Saturday, Dec. 11.”

Council members Ana Sandoval, Rebecca Viagran and John Courage filed the request on Thursday. The council members argue that the city must provide a better way for vulnerable populations to sign up to get a shot. For weeks, council members have struggled to create a plan that improves the signup process. The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has encouraged healthy, younger people to allow vulnerable populations in groups 1A, 1B and 1C to get vaccinated first despite all adults being eligible starting on March 29.

SAN ANTONIO – Plans to redevelop the Alamo Plaza must move forward with a new design and leadership team, according to an announcement by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “The position that Councilman Trevino has taken, which is that the Cenotaph can’t move -- then the Alamo Plan is dead, is not tenable. Last September, the Texas Historical Commission voted to deny the Cenotaph’s relocation, which the Alamo Trust said was necessary to make way for a museum. According to Viagran, her family lineage goes back to the Alamo with a member among the defenders. Any changes must be approved by the city council and the Alamo Trust and the General Land Office of the state.

SAN ANTONIO – The South Texas Veterans Health Care System administered Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to enrolled veterans at Texas A&M University-San Antonio on Saturday. The South Texas VA said they aspired to vaccinate 500 veterans living on the South Side of San Antonio who have difficulties reaching other vaccination sites offered throughout the area. San Antonio Metropolitan Health District reports more than 16,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in District 3, and 256 people have died of COVID-19 in that area. “We have a high percentage of people that do not have health insurance in the southern sector of San Antonio,” Viagran said. District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran says enough is enough. Viagran said she’s paying special attention to the stretch of Commercial Avenue near Sunglo Drive. Speeding vehicles is an issue Viagran says has been plaguing the area for years now and keeping people up at night, too. “Is it making the road from four lanes, two lanes on each side, to just one lane on each side with the center turn lane? Vigaran said depending on the chosen course of action following community input and traffic evaluations, there could be physical changes to this stretch of Commercial Avenue as early as this summer.

SAN ANTONIO – Unlike the City of San Antonio’s mass vaccination clinic at the Alamodome, which required registration online or by calling 311, two other clinics on the South Side and West Side of San Antonio operated by using a toll-free number. WellMed -- in partnership with City Council Districts 3, 4 and 7 -- said that the toll-free number (833-968-1745) was quickly jammed as community members attempted to make an appointment. Rebecca Viagran, who represents District 3, said they received more than 170,000 phone calls from people who wanted one of the 9,000 doses available. “We know that 60% of the population of San Antonio fits in Phase 1B,” Viagran said. According to a social media post from Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, appointments to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the Alicia Trevino Lopez Senior Center are completely filled, as of Sunday evening. This comes just a day after the Alamodome’s mass, no-cost vaccine distribution site filled its registration on Saturday in a matter of minutes. SAN ANTONIO – Two more COVID-19 vaccination sites are coming to the city of San Antonio. SAN ANTONIO – Two city council members who represent San Antonio’s South Side want officials to focus on the most vulnerable communities of the city when distributing COVID-19 vaccinations. The first doses of the vaccine will be reserved for front-line health care workers. The city’s COVID-19 dashboard shows that some of the most active COVID-19 cases are located in South Side ZIP codes. Still, healthcare workers in those hospitals can get vaccinated at the other San Antonio hospitals that will receive the first doses. Both council members thanked the hospital systems who are receiving the vaccine for providing it to health care workers across the city, regardless of where they work.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio’s District 3 is the largest area in the city and is also home to the most food deserts, where large portions of the population lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables. “We do not have any access to readily available fresh fruits and vegetables, unfortunately, because of the lack of grocery stores out there. She says the community needs a big-box grocery store. We got fresh fruits and vegetables -- avocado, tomato, cucumbers,” Viagran said. “We got that fresh fruit and partnered with that Corner Store to have that food out there at a reduced cost.”District 3 has eight convenience stores that carry fresh produce.

But with recent protests pushing police reform, she says this is an incredible opportunity to explore a public safety substation instead.
