Roy Maas Youth Alternatives has been helping local children in crisis for years and its success is being recognized nationwide.

BOERNE, TEXAS – Roy Maas Youth Alternatives has been helping change the lives of at-risk youth for almost 30 years. The safe haven, however, was not spared from last week’s winter storm. “This was unforeseen, greatly because the age of the building, you would have never thought this would happen, Rudolph said. He said staff is still able to meet the demand of the hundreds of meals, but it has not been easy. Presently staff is preparing meals in cabins where the space is small and the process even slower.

“We want to be there to help kids. Falcon is now raising awareness about the importance of having many resources out there to help troubled teens like her son. “They are frustrated and asking for timeouts at our center,” Strentzsch said. “With anxiety and depression, the numbers are astronomical, through the roof, since the pandemic,” Strentzsch said. “Like getting into gangs or with other dynamics that are not healthy that are impacting our kids and families,” Strentzsch said.

SAN ANTONIO The work with homeless and trafficked youth is already demanding for the staff at Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, but the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated their efforts. Despite safety measures, a group of staff and one resident have tested positive for COVID-19. RMYA staff started planning for the crisis back in February before COVID-19 hit locally. Out of 166 staff members, six have tested positive along with one of the youth. The RMYA team is working 13-plus hour days to make sure the youth know someone will always be there to help them.
