The two leading mental health units — SA Core and S.M.A.R.T. — have increased their response hours this summer.

Though council members avoided discussing it in detail, the police shooting death of a woman while she was believed to be in a mental health episode seemed to hang over a police budget discussion.

The three-member SA Core team handles mental health calls downtown and the near West Side. Now city leaders want to add teams to cover the North and South parts of the city.
