The Indians can match the record when they host Detroit in a three-game series next weekend. An ensuing argument earned Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire an ejection, the first of his season and 85th of his career. Facing a Twins team that came in with the second-best run differential in baseball, Bieber allowed three singles in his eight innings. Bieber surpassed Nolan Ryan's AL record (25) for the most in a pitcher's first two starts of a season. Spooner, the man whose record Bieber tied, never matched the promise of his 1954 debut, when he threw two shutouts in the final week of the season.
