SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio seniors will soon be able to sign up for a vaccine registry, which could make it easier for them to get an appointment. The San Antonio City Council members present voted unanimously Wednesday afternoon. AdIt could take three to four weeks to develop and open up the registry, Bridger said, which the city will develop with Health Access San Antonio (HASA), a local, health information organization. So Courage, along with District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran and District 7 Councilwoman Ana Sandoval, called for a special city council meeting to address it again. “Once ready, the registry will make it significantly easier for residents 65 years and older to obtain a vaccine appointment.”

SAN ANTONIO – Some of the community’s homebound seniors have started to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from the comfort of their own homes. The Seniors First Program is an effort by the state to deliver 1,000 shots to the community a week specifically for homebound seniors. On Tuesday, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said 380 vaccines have been given out in two days. Meals on Wheels San Antonio provides the list of interested clients to the city and they determine how to prioritize vaccine recipients. Watch the video in the player above.

Retirement Center Management, which handles the property, said it is taking quick action to ensure its residents are safe both in independent and assisted living buildings. The police were called in each case and the incidents are subject to an ongoing police investigation. San Antonio police detectives with Property Crimes Unit are investigating the cases. “I’ve told them that they need to get rid of these antiquated wooden doors with cheap locks and aging frames,” Dankof said.

SAN ANTONIO – Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, countless seniors, among the most susceptible to COVID-19, are now homebound. To help those who are feeling isolated, Adult Protective Services has teamed up with San Antonio’s faith community and the nonprofit Senior Planet, on a committee known as Silver Sabbath, to teach seniors how to go online. "Adult Protective Services is excited to work together with the Silver Sabbath Committee in our efforts to build connections for older adults in the Bexar County area," said Ann Cortez, district director for APS. Rosalind Harris, founder and executive director of the Inspiration Center, said she hopes seniors and their caregivers can take part. "So they can literally watch the seminar together," Harris said, and share what they've learned with others.

Guadalupe County High school seniors in Guadalupe County are excited after learning four moms worked hard to put together their prom, which was at one time was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a lot of people giving TVs for door prizes, a DJ is giving his time, flowers, we have cash prizes, Bassel said. We have had to unfortunately limit it to only seniors and their guest and we are 8 tickets away from the max which is 250, Bassel said. Weve been on these kids constantly like, be really careful, Bassel said. Do all the things so we can enjoy these last two events together for the moms and kids and everybody.

SAN ANTONIO – As temperatures continue to heat up, Project Cool is in full effect to help seniors in the community stay cool this summer with free fans. Dozens of seniors received 20-inch box fans on Friday. The program's goal is to provide 5,000 fans as a low-cost and low-energy way to keep seniors cool without increasing their electricity bill. Project Cool is organized through the City of San Antonio and various nonprofits, like Catholic Charities. They can be dropped off at Catholic Charities at 202 West French Place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sidney Lanier High School seniors held a unique graduation celebration in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
