A passerby noticed the flames and smoke around 3:30 a.m. and called firefighters to the 4500 block of Rittiman Road. They found fire coming out of the building, which used to house a Sonic fast food restaurant. At one point, there were more than a dozen fire units at the scene, including a ladder truck. Firefighters had to battle windy conditions to keep the fire from spreading to a gas station next door.
