The pandemic-reduced crowd watched Clint Bowyer emerge as the leader with Jimmie Johnson second in the last Texas race as full-time drivers for both veterans. It was fitting that Bowyer and the seven-time series champion Johnson were leading when the race was stopped. The 41-year-old Bowyer, a 10-time winner in 16 Cup seasons and twice a runner-up in Texas, plans to move into the broadcast booth next season.

Elliott won the race. The path to the championship finale begins Sunday at Kansas Speedway, the first of three races in the title-setting third round. It's a fairly straightforward series with ensuing stops at Texas Motor Speedway, like Kansas a 1.5-mile intermediate oval, then half-mile Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR's shortest and oldest active track. Hamlin has won NASCAR's last two visits to Kansas, a turnaround after several so-so races. “If you fast-forward to Kansas and Texas, it’s a mile-and-a-half, so everything is just pointing in our direction right now,” he said.

Texas hosted the IndyCar season opener June 6 without any spectators, then submitted and received approval by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's office to have fans at the NASCAR race.

Tennessee officials permitted Bristol to sell up to 30,000 tickets less than 20% of its capacity of 140,000-plus as NASCAR slowly begins to reopen the gates. The All-Star race debuted at Charlotte in 1985 and this year marked just the second time it was not held at that track. "NASCAR and Bristol Motor Speedway showed the future of safe, live sporting events with an electric night.The event was not without glitches. Both NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports are private companies and do not release attendance figures, but Bristol appeared to have at least 20,000 spectators. Texas Motor Speedway may not have that many Sunday, but Speedway Motorsports can adjust protocols if needed.

NASCAR already has rescheduled races through June 21 and the update released Thursday begins the next weekend at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. The track will host ARCA, the Truck Series, two Cup Series races on consecutive days, June 27-28, and the Xfinity Series. New Hampshire will host the Cup Series on Aug. 2 in the final event announced in this latest revised schedule. NASCAR canceled eight points races in the Cup Series and the All-Star Race during a 10-week shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic. NASCAR has so far run nine national series events five in the Cup Series since it resumed May 17 without spectators.

But for lucky students in Denton County, Texas, their graduation ceremony will be an affair to remember. "We are honored by the opportunity to support each and every Denton County high school graduate as best we can in these difficult times." Because of the venue's large size, each high school will be able to host its ceremony on or close to the original date while maintaining social distancing guidelines. "We can't thank the leadership of Texas Motor Speedway enough for the ability to use the speedway for our graduation ceremonies," Dr. Ryder Warren, superintendent of Northwest Independent School District, said in a statement.
