HELOTES, Texas – A driver involved in a crash in Helotes earlier this year that killed a couple and injured their four children has been arrested on charges related to drunken driving. The arrest Monday of Elena Carranza, who doesn’t turn 21 until August, marks a dramatic shift in the case. At the scene of the January 3 crash, officers told KSAT12 that it appeared to be just an accident. Craig Smith, 54, and his 39-year-old wife, Susan, both were killed in the crash. Although police initially said their injuries were minor, an arrest warrant affidavit now shows one of the children suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Smoothie King, located in the 11400 block of Bandera Road, received a score of 75 during the Jan. 19 inspection. Establishments that serve food are not permitted to use toxic, residential pest control products and must instead use pesticides certified for use in restaurants, city health records show. The business was also dinged for having bathrooms in need of being cleaned and for having floor drains that were clogged. SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police thought they were responding to a shooting and a possible standoff at a building on the city’s Northwest Side Sunday night, but what they found was much different. Officers secured the perimeter of the building and closed down Bandera Road. Officers made contact with someone inside the building and all of the individuals inside were talked into coming outside. Officers checked each one for warrants and found that six of the individuals had warrants. Among them, there were three felony warrants, two class B misdemeanor warrants and 9 class C misdemeanor warrants.

A man with a red cap, brown shorts and a black mask walked into the store, demanded cash from the register and held the clerk at gunpoint, police said. The man left with beer and an undisclosed amount of money.

SAN ANTONIO – Neptor Gudiel is struggling to keep his restaurant, Machu Picchu Peruvian Grill, alive as COVID-19 cases continue to spike in the Alamo City. Gudiel was forced to reduce his staff of five to just him and one other person, and he’s cut back on the hours of operation. To keep up with social distancing guidelines within his small business, Gudiel has limited the number of occupants to 12. Eric Epley, executive director of the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council, said hospital numbers in Bexar County are on the rise and aren’t slowing down. “My sense is that we will continue to see a steady climb of all the numbers,” Epley said.

SAN ANTONIO – Construction is set to begin early next year on a major project to expand Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s North Side, but environmental concerns linger. The Texas Department of Transportation plans to widen the roadway to 10 lanes, including HOV lanes, from State Highway 16 (Bandera Road) to Interstate 35. Some environmental and public advocacy groups are still criticizing the plans. “And 1604 falls in that later category.”The entire project would cover a 23 mile stretch of Loop 1604. And work should be completed on the portion of the project from Bandera Road to west of U.S. 281 in 2026.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a man on the city’s Northwest Side late Thursday night. The crash happened around 11 p.m. in the 1220 block of Bandera Road, not far from West Woodlawn Avenue and Hillcrest Drive. Police said the pickup truck struck Cameron in the outside lane closest to the curb edge and then the driver continued westbound on Bandera Road away from the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram made no effort to stop and render aid, police said. Authorities said when the driver of the Dodge Ram is found, they will face a charge of failure to stop and render aid, resulting in a death.

SAN ANTONIO A gravel truck rolled onto its side, causing a big mess that took crews the better part of Monday morning to clean up, officials said. The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on Bandera Road at Loop 1604. Crews had to shut down Bandera Road for several hours while they cleared the road. No official word yet on what caused the truck to roll over, if anyone was injured or if charges will be filed. SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police and Crime Stoppers are looking for the person responsible for the shooting and robbery of an individual at a Northeast Side apartment complex. According to police, the suspect pointed a handgun at the victim, stating that a duffel bag was his stuff. That’s when, police said, the suspect opened the rear door of the vehicle and grabbed the duffel bag, which contained the victim’s money. The suspect turned and fired his gun, wounding the victim before fleeing with the money in an unknown car. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police officers who were called out for a stabbing late Thursday found an illegal gambling room instead. Police said officers discovered the gambling room around 10 p.m. at a building in the 1800 block of Bandera Road. About 19 people were at the establishment at the time officers arrived. Police said at least two people were detained for warrants, and others were given citations. The investigation remains ongoing.

In June 2018, Ana Gutierrez was hit near the intersection of Bandera Road and Eckhert in Leon Valley. She was being billed for the hour and 25 minutes the Leon Valley Fire Department spent at the scene cleaning up chemicals that spilled from her car. Not everybody who receives this service is a Leon Valley resident and pays taxes to Leon Valley. Leon Valley isnt alone in charging the response fee. Shes reached out to state lawmakers, urging them to look into the use of accident response fees in Texas.

LEON VALLEY, Texas – A CPS Energy bucket truck that was stolen from a Leon Valley gas station on Bandera Road Friday morning has been recovered, CPS officials said. CPS Energy officials said the company is working closely with the San Antonio Police Department on the investigation.

The robbery occurred Feb. 10 in the 11800 block of Bandera Road, not far from Loop 1604. Anyone with any knowledge of the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP. SAN ANTONIO – One of the most congested roads in the state of Texas is prompting a San Antonio City Councilwoman to call for action. District 7 City Councilwoman Ana Sandoval, elected to the San Antonio City Council in 2017 and the first naturalized citizen to serve on the council, says Bandera Road is causing quite a traffic cluster in the city. Councilwoman Sandoval also touched on carbon neutrality, saying it’s still a goal for the Alamo City. If so, we asked Councilwoman Sandoval, is the infrastructure already in place in San Antonio? Maintaining those streets, we also drive a lot on them,” Councilwoman Sandoval said.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department said two men were hospitalized following a shooting Tuesday at an apartment complex on Sherril Brook Road near Broadview Drive and Bandera Road. Police said the men have serious injuries but are expected to survive. The two men were sitting outside an apartment when they got into an altercation with two other men in the apartment’s courtyard, police said. Eventually, a gun was pulled out and the victims were shot, police said. Police said they are looking for the two suspects.

SAN ANTONIO – Where are drivers who use State Highway 16 also known as Bandera Road going? According to TxDOT, Bandera Road is one of top 100 most congested roads in the state. The study shows Bandera Road is a connecting point for those going from Grissom Road to 410 and I-10. Proposals of an elevated highway and making Bandera Road into a boulevard are all still being considered. The second is slated for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Leon Valley Community and Conference Center, 6427 Evers Road in Leon Valley.
