The Battle of Flowers Association announced Wednesday that the decision was made to cancel the band festival after the Fiesta Commission rescheduled the party with a purpose from April to June 17-27, 2021. āWorking with every school district in the city to successfully produce the Battle of Flowers Band Festival, we are so lucky to have this partnership,ā said Battle of Flowers Band Festival Vice President Cameron Armstrong. The Battle of Flowers Band Festival hosts more than 5,000 area high school students in a marching band competition and performance that draws roughly 20,000 spectators to Alamo Stadium each spring, according to a press release. School-age participants make up a major portion of the Battle of Flowers parade, with approximately 70% of the roughly 12,000 participants representing San Antonio area high schools and colleges.

For the first time in the 95-year history of the Battle of Flowers Oratorical Contest for college students, the contestants will not deliver their speeches in person. Due to COVID-19 restrictions placed on students' travel and with the organizationās protocol for safely gathering established, the 2021 Oratorical Contest will take place on Friday, February 26 at the Witte Museum. The top five (5) student finalists receive the following monetary scholarship awards:First place: $5,000Second place: $2,500Third place: $1,500Fourth place: $1,000Fifth place: $750There is also a prize for the department of the academic advisor of the first, second and third place winners also receive substantial awards of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. The contest seeks to encourage young peopleās interest in the history and traditions of Texas.
