The San Antonio Independent School District said on Monday a fight happened just outside of campus. They said the person who pulled the gun was not a Burbank High School student.

The San Antonio Independent School District will close all schools on Thursday and Friday to check buildings and make repairs following this week’s frigid weather.

Burbank High School got quite a facelift for the new school year.

San Antonio ISD students who graduated from Luther Burbank High School said goodbye on its last night, as the oldest building on campus is set for demolition.

It’s been a fixture on the South Side of San Antonio for 85 years and now Burbank High School is closing the doors of its old buildings, but not before a sweet sendoff.

She is a history teacher at Burbank High School and she says her goal is to make sure her students succeed.

SAN ANTONIO – As the country waits and watches a historic election unfold, some San Antonio high schoolers are expressing some feelings of anxiety at the outcome of the race. Dusengimana Ernest, a Burbank High School student, summed up his emotions over the race for the Whitehouse in just a few words. “I feel very anxious and scared,” Ernest said. Kate Ortiz, another student at Burbank High School, said she and her friends are scared of the close outcome so far. Gilbert Vasquez, a Government teacher at Burbank High School, is utilizing the election to teach students in real-time.

SAN ANTONIO Questions are mounting after a teacher at Burbank High School was placed on administrative leave this week. The action came after concerns were raised about San Antonio Independent School Districts plans for in-person learning next week. Lead Organizer with the San Antonio Alliance, Diana De Leon believes it was an act of retaliation. However, members with the San Antonio Alliance have filed a grievance with the principal at Burbank High School. Amphlett is also part of a coalition made up of SAISD teachers, students, and parents.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio teachers are raising concerns as the academic year approaches and COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the area. Luke Amphlett, a history teacher at Burbank High School with the San Antonio Independent School District, believes parents should get the option to choose online learning for their children. If its possible, and you are given the choice, dont come to school to learn, Amphlett said. The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District issued a health directive that extended virtual learning should continue until at least Sept. 7. Amphlett misses the interactions with students and teachers, but he said education should not come before health.

Burbank High School Teacher Luke Amphlett said his biggest concern among he and his fellow educators is student safety. Amphlett said he believes the guidelines released by TEA this week are too rigid and are not in line with what local health experts are recommending. “There’s actually no reason why we can’t build flexibility into our school schedules,” Amphlett said. “We’ve just pulled off an incredible feat, which was taking school and turning it into an online practice in the span of literally two weeks. A lot of them are retired teachers and a lot of them are older.

SAN ANTONIO – The Edgewood Independent School District is the latest San Antonio area district to suspend summer athletic camps in the wake of a spike of COVID-19 cases in Bexar County. Robert Gomez, Athletic Director for Edgewood ISD, announced Monday that all summer strength, conditioning and skills camps at all district campuses were suspended until further notice. Edgewood is one of a handful of local districts or schools that have suspended summer workouts amid the pandemic. Burbank High School suspended their athletic program for a week, while Harlandale ISD and San Marcos CISD suspended summer strength and conditioning programs indefinitely. The UIL allowed workouts to begin on June 8 under certain guidelines.

SAN ANTONIO Over the past week, local athletes have flocked back to the practice field en masse, grateful for a return to organized workouts. With restrictions in place, the primary message has focused on the health and safety of all student-athletes and coaches. That is precisely the reason why Burbank athletes will not return to workouts for the forseeable future. Around 8:45 p.m. Monday evening, Burbank Footballs twitter account announced that strength and conditioning camp has been temporarily suspended until further notice. The tweet pointed athletes toward Google classroom for further updates and asked the general student body to stay safe. Burbank is believed to be the first school in San Antonio -- if not the state of Texas -- to shut down strength and conditioning workouts since all student-athletes were officially allowed back on campus on June 8.
