SAN ANTONIO – Cosmetology students enrolled at Edgewood ISD’s Fine Arts Academy are making up for lost time. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the students out of the classroom for several months. Holly Yates, a cosmetology instructor at the school, said many of her students had a difficult time learning virtually. Although sanitizing and proper hygiene has always been a rule in cosmetology, Yates felt it was important students felt safe when they returned to class. A small group of students have returned for in-person learning, but with new safety protocols in place.

SAN ANTONIO – The family of Edgewood ISD teacher Cynthia Ritz, who died from complications related to COVID-19, remembers her love for education, family and friends. Lopez said Ritz tested positive for COVID-19 on Jan. 7. She had worked at Edgewood ISD for 18 years. “We got two boys, and she was always like pushing them for their education, everything education,” Lopez said. SAN ANTONIO – Edgewood Independent School District officials announced Tuesday that the district would begin testing students and staff members for COVID-19. The district said in a statement that the first phase of the testing process will begin at 7:15 a.m. for teachers and 8:15 a.m. for students on Wednesday at John F. Kennedy High School Auditorium. Eduardo Hernández, superintendent of Edgewood ISD, said the testing will allow district members to slow the spread of the virus in the area. “The collaboration with Community Labs and the ASPIRE Network, allows us to put in place additional safety measures for our students and staff, which is always our main priority," Hernández said. SAN ANTONIO – The Edgewood Independent School District is using a tool to keep track of students, staff and visitors for COVID-19 symptoms or exposure. The district began using the DrOwl app last week. “Each time they log into the app, their child’s name pops up and then they can answer the screening questions that we have embedded in the app,” Gamez said. If someone marks that they have COVID-19 symptoms, the staff is made aware of it. Around 2,000 students are back at Edgewood ISD schools for in-person instruction.

Tuesday marked the grand opening of the Rogena Reed Carver Community Resource Center, a joint venture to ensure Edgewood ISD students and families have the resources the basic necessities. SAN ANTONIO – When a special education student graduates from high school, that transition into the real world can be a little tough. The Edgewood Independent School District’s Burleson School for Innovation and Education helps special needs students ages 18-21 make that transition easier and help them reach life goals. A graphic t-shirt print shop and bike repair shop help them gain niche work skills. An outdoor garden on campus isn’t just a place to relax, but a workspace that teaches students how to grow and take care of plants. Typically, the program has about 30 students on campus, but this Fall only about half of them are coming back for in-person learning.

Over the past six months, Edgewood ISD has adapted -- and plans to offer education, technology, meals and other resources to the community. The first eight weeks of school within the district will be remote learning, all held online. “All of our students do receive devices for their online learning,” Calderon-Lugo said. Edgewood ISD is accepting applications for the 2020-21 academic year. As the district is an open-boundary school district, all students from Bexar County can apply to an Edgewood School of Innovation.

SAN ANTONIO Many of the families within the Edgewood Independent School District who worked in the hospitality industry exemplify the job losses brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Hernandez considers the digital divide this generations civil rights issue, he said without the basic necessities and the emotional support families need, students will be unable to focus on learning from home. SAN ANTONIO – Edgewood Independent School District board members voted to extend remote-only learning until October 9. The district had planned to be online-only for the first four weeks of school but decided to extend to eight weeks. EISD is one of the first San Antonio-area school districts to announce an extension of remote-only learning past the initial four weeks. The South San ISD school board voted on July 22 to have remote-only learning for the first eight weeks of school beginning on Aug. 12. The latest guidance from the Texas Education Agency says school districts can extend to remote-only learning to eight weeks if approved by the school board.

SAN ANTONIO The Edgewood ISD School Board voted to modify the start date to the 2020-2021 academic calendar from Aug. 10 to Aug. 17. Additionally, the board voted to utilize remote learning for the first four weeks of school or until labor day. After that, the board will re-evaluate and consider extending or an additional four weeks based on recommendations from local and state health agencies. According to the district, the intersession weeks are meant to offer additional instructional support to students. SAN ANTONIO – The Edgewood Independent School District is the latest San Antonio area district to suspend summer athletic camps in the wake of a spike of COVID-19 cases in Bexar County. Robert Gomez, Athletic Director for Edgewood ISD, announced Monday that all summer strength, conditioning and skills camps at all district campuses were suspended until further notice. Edgewood is one of a handful of local districts or schools that have suspended summer workouts amid the pandemic. Burbank High School suspended their athletic program for a week, while Harlandale ISD and San Marcos CISD suspended summer strength and conditioning programs indefinitely. The UIL allowed workouts to begin on June 8 under certain guidelines.

SAN ANTONIO – More than 150,000 meals have been handed out to students in the Edgewood Independent School District as area schools near six weeks of distant learning due to the pandemic. SAN ANTONIO – The Edgewood Independent School District (EISD) school board unanimously approved a compensation resolution that will allow the district to continue to pay all staff during the district closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Edgewood ISD will be closed through April 24. For any work performed over 40 hours per week, overtime compensation will be paid in accordance with federal law. However, academic instruction for students continues via the following distance-learning website or instructional packets. Breakfast and lunch to go curbside meals will also continue to be distributed from 7:30 a.m to 9:30 a.m and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Persephone Garcia, 3rd-grade student at Cisneros Elementary, is donating clothing to The Children’s Shelter to help children stay warm this winter season. “So I wrote a letter to my principal asking if I can do a sock drive and she said yes,” Garcia said. “I can’t wait for them to get their socks,” Garcia said.
