Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez said Thursday evening that 1,000 teens are being housed at the Freeman Coliseum’s Expo Center.

A contractor hired by the federal government to provide services for the migrant teens being housed at the Freeman Coliseum was not prepared for their arrival, according to City Manager Erik Walsh.

SAN ANTONIO – Catholic Charities says the 500 migrant teens who arrived in the city on Monday are being welcomed by people who care in the San Antonio community. “They’re bringing personalized gifts with notes that say, ‘We love you, and we’re praying for you, and we hope you’re well,’” said Tara Ford, spokeswoman for Catholic Charities. AdShe said about 1,000 people already have offered to volunteer, but more are needed since more migrant arrivals are expected over the next several weeks. “We’ll understand a little bit more over the next few days about what is needed,” Ford said. “We’re very grateful to our community in San Antonio for stepping up and always serving with us,” Ford said.

Catholic Charities is the main organization in San Antonio that is providing and coordinating supportive services to the migrant refugees.

Joaquin Castro, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Becky Clay-Flores and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg toured a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at Freeman Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon. The tour was held less than 24 hours after buses with about 500 migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border arrived at the Freeman Coliseum Expo Center. The group wanted to visit the facility to make sure the children were being given the proper housing and support. The U.S, Department of Health and Human Services is working to make sure the unaccompanied children are unified with their families or put with suitable sponsors in the U.S. Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Becky Clay-Flores and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg appear at a news conference after touring a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at Freeman Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon.

SAN ANTONIO – Buses filled with hundreds of migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border arrived at the Freeman Coliseum’s expo center Monday night. Roughly 500 children are now sheltered at the facility, which is expected to house as many as 2,400. The intake site is providing standards of care for the children, which includes clean and comfortable sleeping quarters, meals, recreational activities and access to medical services. AdVolunteers worked all weekend to help set up the facility and to make sure they have things like clothing and hygiene products. Wolff along with Congressman Joaquin Castro and Commissioner Rebecca Clay Flores, are expected to tour the facility later on Tuesday.

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County leaders have entered a deal with the federal government to provide temporary shelter at Freeman Coliseum to migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without an adult family member. As many as 2,400 unaccompanied migrant children will be housed at the expo halls at Freeman Coliseum starting next week, Wolff said. The county charged HHS the “standard rate” to rent the building and officials said the county would be reimbursed for any other costs incurred. The children will be tested for COVID-19 before coming to the Freeman Coliseum and then will be tested every five days while they’re here, Wolff said. The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland would also be used to house unaccompanied migrant children, but Wolff said Lackland would not facilitate as many children as Freeman will.

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said during Tuesday’s COVID-19 briefing that the county has been in discussions with federal officials about using Freeman Coliseum as an overflow site for migrant children crossing into the country. It is not a permanent solution.”It’s unclear yet how many children would be brought to Freeman Coliseum. However, on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service also inquired about using JBSA-Lackland to house the minors for a period of time. “Look, what is happening on the border, as we have seen before, is just an incredible human tragedy,” Nirenberg said. Obviously, if the county requested assistance from the city, we would be providing that.”Wolff said he expects a decision about Freeman Coliseum in the next two to three days.

SAN ANTONIO – Miss Rodeo Texas Jordan Maldonado is making a historic trip back to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual competition to crown a new Miss Rodeo Texas was canceled. The cancellation means Maldonado gets to keeps her sash, buckle and hat and ride into the Freeman Coliseum to perform her rodeo duties for a history-making second year in a row. AdSince then, Maldonado has been able to appear at a few smaller rodeos, but San Antonio by far is her biggest event since the pandemic started. Maldonado said she is excited to be a part of rodeo this year since it will be held at the Freeman Coliseum.

SAN ANTONIO – Freeman Coliseum Executive Director Derrick Howard announced several new COVID-19 prevention measures in a letter penned to the Bexar County Commissioners Court days ahead of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. AdThe letter, sent to the Commissioners Court on Tuesday, came one week after Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff asked organizers to postpone the rodeo. Wolff noted that Austin and Fort Worth canceled their rodeos and Houston postponed its rodeo because of the pandemic. SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County commissioners are considering paying to test San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo attendees for COVID-19, but rodeo organizers aren’t interested. Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert raised the idea of testing rodeo attendees with the county footing the bill during Tuesday’s Bexar County Commissioners Court meeting. The commissioners are next scheduled to meet on Feb. 9 -- two days before the start of the rodeo. However, Sides said rapid testing for entry was “not only financially but logistically a challenge for us. The Rodeo is a County event in a County facility, so operational decisions are up to the County.”

SAN ANTONIO – “A Very Electric Christmas” is bringing two live performances to the Freeman Coliseum on Dec. 20. According to a press release, the show combines puppetry, theater, dance and technology with holiday favorites. “A Very Electric Christmas” is a story about a young bird and his family that are traveling south for the winter but the young bird gets thrown off course and ends up at the North Pole. Tickets to the event are socially distanced and are sold in pods of four and six. Other safety protocols that are in place according to the Freeman Coliseum include reduced capacity, temperature checks upon entry and masks must be worn at all times unless seated.

SAN ANTONIO – Several significant events have been canceled since the COVID-19 pandemic started earlier this year, but the Rock-n-Roll Marathon and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo are expected to go on as scheduled. SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has announced that it will take place in 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a press release said Thursday. The rodeo will take place Feb. 11-28 at the Freeman Coliseum. The rodeo was previously held at the coliseum from 1950 to 2003 when the SBC Center (now AT&T Center) was built. A press release said they will continue to host exhibitors from throughout the state to compete in agriculture events and will continue to try to educate the youth of Texas. The carnival is also returning for patrons to enjoy, the press release said.

Electric-Fiesta has planned for a variety of drive-in performances, including comedy and EDM, for the Freeman Coliseum for Halloween weekend. The multi-day series starts with an interactive sing-a-long edition of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and a “non-essential comedy” show on Oct. 29. On Oct. 30 and 31, the EDM Drive-In, Volume 2, will call Virtual Riot, Etc! To adhere to social distancing guidelines, venues and promoters have switched to the drive-in experience for movie showings, concerts and performances. This summer, the EDM Drive-In made its debut at the Freeman Coliseum, with towers set up so Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputies could monitor at a safe distance and officers patrolling the grounds.

SAN ANTONIO On Sunday, Intocable will be back in San Antonio for a live drive-in concert in the Freeman Coliseum parking lot. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, band members say they have been forced to try out new things. After seeing a band in Europe perform a live drive-in concert, singer Ricky Muoz threw the idea out to the other members of the band and their manager. The drive-in tour was a hit but in early July the coronavirus hit the band. Thats the city that signed us and its very important to the industry of Tejano music, Muoz said.

SAN ANTONIO County officials on Friday defended a horse auction at the Freeman Coliseum scheduled for next week that will move forward despite an ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases in San Antonio and restrictions on large gatherings. The Texas Quarter Horse Association Annual Yearling Sale is scheduled for July 24-25, inside expo hall B, according to a description of the event on the associations website. According to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolffs latest executive order, updated Wednesday, public gatherings in excess of 10 people are prohibited in Bexar County. Given the capacity of the building and the size of these animals and their pens, social distancing is not anticipated to be an issue. A portion of expo hall is also being on standby as a makeshift hospital.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio hospitals are doing everything they can to make more beds available to patients who need them. On Monday, the amount of available staffed hospital beds, which is also known as hospital capacity, was listed at 12%. Epley said its better for hospitals to build capacity within their own walls rather than create makeshift hospitals. For example, instead of using Freeman Coliseum as an overflow hospital, hospitals would be better off adding beds to their cafeterias. If hospitals reach their limit, it doesnt impact only COVID-19 patients.

SAN ANTONIO Hundreds of people are expected to fill the parking lot of the Freeman Coliseum for an electronic dance music festival Friday and Saturday amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 350 vehicles will be allowed to enter San Antonios first-ever EDM Drive-In. According to the festivals spokesperson, Sid Zuber, its a chance to party safely during the pandemic. SAN ANTONIO – The COVID-19 testing site at Freeman Coliseum is booked until Tuesday amid a rising number of novel coronavirus cases in Bexar County, officials said. San Antonio metro area named COVID-19 hotspot, CNBC reports“Although many testing sites are overwhelmed with demand for COVID-19 tests, we are increasing the capacity to test and expanding access to both no-cost and paid testing sites across Bexar County,” stated Dr. Walkup testing sites will expand six days per week instead of three and will be open Monday through Saturday. SAN ANTONIO Bexar County is distributing free Pelixglass kits to small, local businesses as they reopen during the coronavirus pandemic. The kits were handed out Monday morning at the Freeman Coliseum in order to assist small businesses reopen safely, according to a news release. For small businesses that missed the event, county officials said there will be additional distributions on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday in other precincts. All small businesses in the county qualify for the kits but they must pre-register and bring a confirmation email, according to a news release.
