Read full article: Bexar County commissioners approve funding to aid medical examiner’s office facing increased workloadSAN ANTONIO – This week, Bexar County Commissioners Court, in a unanimous vote, approved a request for additional funding from the chief Bexar County medical examiner to deal with the exponential increase in the ME’s office’s workload. “Last year, we saw a 17% workload, and we’re used to 5%,” Dr. Kimberly Molina told commissioners. “We have six doctors handling the workload of nine.”She said, in addition to hiring part-time medical examiners, she needs additional office staff. The Medical Examiner’s Office currently has a staff of 56. Molina said the shortage of personnel could have a negative impact on the Medical Examiner’s Office’s accreditation.

In the memo, Nirenberg said VIA officials are considering asking voters in November to approve the allocation of the 1/8th cent sales tax to go toward transportation funding. VIA board chairwoman still hopeful 1/8 cent sales tax will go to transit agencyNirenberg said hes asking VIA officials to present the steps they are taking to manage operations within their current budget with their recent CARES Act allocation. Although Nirenberg pushed for investments into the citys transit system, he said he would not support the ballot measure. The 1/8th cent, once championed to expand transit, is still needed to simply preserve transit service for those who rely on it.

While some throughout the nation are calling for a complete overhaul of their municipal departments, in San Antonio, some are hoping that some police department funds are reallocated to help improve community relations. We want to get rid of that barrier between law enforcement and that fear from the community, peaceful protest organizer Antonio Lee said. Lee said helping to bridge the gap includes redistributing some of the San Antonio Police Departments funding and putting funds toward community engagement efforts. San Antonio Police Officers Association President Mike Helle pointed out several efforts already in the works, like culturally sensitivity training for officers and recreational activities, such as midnight basketball.
