Greg Abbott announced Thursday, as the state ramps up mass vaccination efforts while hospitals grapple with record numbers of patients. State health records show 1,021,511 doses given with 132,396 people fully vaccinated. The governor has said the supply of vaccine remains limited but urged the federal government to ship more doses more quickly.

The Texas Department of State Health Services reported Sunday that 9,856 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized across the state. This month Texas surpassed 9,000 hospitalized coronavirus patients for the first time since a deadly summer outbreak. Johns Hopkins is reporting over 25,700 COVID-19 related deaths in Texas, the second highest in the country overall. State health officials said Friday that Texas will receive 620,000 more doses of COVID-19 vaccines over the next week.

The Mesquite Police Department said off-duty officers from the East Texas cities of Jefferson and Seven Points were providing construction security in Dallas early Saturday when the construction worker was hit. When Mesquite officers arrived, the suspect had been shot and the off-duty officers who pursued him were providing first aid. Biggs said the construction worker had been in stable condition but forwarded questions about updates to Dallas police, who responded to the shooting. Dallas police Officer Tamika Dameron said Sunday that the department did not know the current condition of the construction worker.
