Greg Abbott’s announcement of the state’s “100% reopening.” Since then, area school districts have explained their safety protocols going forward. Bandera ISD - The district said it will not change its current COVID-19 safety protocols following Abbott’s announcement. South San Antonio ISD - South San ISD will continue to include required mask usage as part of COVID-19 safety protocols. This list will be updated as more schools in the area begin to examine their own COVID-19 safety protocols.

SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District had its share of water lines that burst, but the costliest damage to the city’s second largest school district was to four large chillers at three of its schools. “Some of those chillers just froze over, broke and have to be replaced, unfortunately,” said NEISD spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor. Normally used for air conditioning systems, the chillers affected were at Churchill High School, Bush Middle School and Garner Middle School. “We had so many wonderful, wonderful maintenance staff, custodians, everyone who left their own families at home,” she said. “When it’s all said and done, we’re probably looking at about two million.”Chancellor said the school district is covered by insurance, but it has a $100,000 deductible.

SAN ANTONIO – As students continue to adjust amid the pandemic, a North East ISD librarian says social and emotional learning is still essential for students. When the school year started, Wright said she created different kits for students. Wright said that making the kits for the students led her to create a social-emotional learning section at the library. “So, those are the things that help me to understand that there’s a need.”Wright said there is also a section for teachers with books that can help incorporate social emotional learning in the classroom. Northside ISD reported 191 student and 161 staff cumulative cases in the state’s last report for the week ending on Nov. 15. Staff cases went from 17 new cases in the Nov. 1-8 report to 44 new staff cases from Nov. 8-15. The state failed to add the district’s data for Nov. 8, but the NEISD website shows 15 new student cases and 17 new staff cases. The district reported 183 student cases and 49 staff cumulative cases on Nov. 15. NEISD reported 15 new student cases and 17 new staff cases for this period.

SAN ANTONIO – More students will be returning to the classroom Monday at North East ISD and Northside ISD campuses, school officials said Wednesday. Only students whose parents or guardians previously signed up for in-person learning for the second grading period will be allowed to return to the classroom. Parents can still keep their children in virtual learning, and they may change learning environments for them every four weeks. Once the new students are back on campus, they must wear masks, wash their hands and practice social distancing. Northside ISD also plans to accept new students Monday for in-person learning.

The total count of on-campus staff cases during the same period is 2,175 confirmed cases out of just over 800,000. SAN ANTONIO A handful of students and teachers are back in the classroom as some area school districts have started in-person learning, with the majority having done remote learning since mid-August. Other area districts returning in person include Northside, North East and Alamo Heights ISDs. Northside ISD will have some students return and the district said it will continue to monitor the situation before fully having students and staff return. SAN ANTONIO – Northside ISD and North East ISD will delay holding in-person instruction for students at the start of the new school year. Instead, both school districts will utilize distance learning for students in an effort to stay safe and limit the spread of the coronavirus. Northside ISD will begin its 2020-2021 school year Monday, Aug. 24 with distance learning. According to school district officials, there will be no in-person instruction until at least the Tuesday after Labor Day, which is Sept. 8. The school district said it will also offer assistance to families that may not have devices or internet for their children to use for distance learning.

Caitlin Vela-Mota of the North East Independent School District has exemplified academic prowess and perseverance and is now a KSAT12 2020 Great Graduate. “I was so happy, because I was actually losing hope at that time,” graduating senior Vela-Mota said about the moment she learned she was getting a special award. Vela-Mota received a scholarship for homeless youth and part of that award is a trip to Washington DC. Great Graduate 2020: Caitlin Vela-Mota (KSAT)“It was a healthy distraction for me and an escape and the best way I can get accepted or even go is to make sure that I am a good candidate,” Vela-Mota said. Caitlin currently has a home with a family she calls her godparents and the sky for her now has no limits.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Food Bank is working with the North East Independent School District to make sure families living in the district are being fed. The food bank kicked off the first of four food drives scheduled for the district this month on Wednesday and served about 1,800 families. Volunteers who helped during the drive included teachers, counselors and the National Guard. Families who want to take part in upcoming drives must register online.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – To make it easier for children to stay safe at home, the North East Independent School District is relaxing the rules a bit when it comes to its free meal pickup program. They can simply show proper documentation, such as the child’s birth certificate or school report card, to pick up meals. The goal of the program is to make sure children don’t go hungry while schools are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to NEISD’S website, the program is open to all children, even if they don’t attend schools in that district. SAN ANTONIO – A Reagan High School student who was found unconscious in the school’s weight room has died, officials said. Reagan High principal Brenda Shelton said the student was found around 2:30 p.m. Monday. Staff members attempted livesaving measures, but the student did not survive, Shelton said. The San Antonio Police Department is investigating the case as an apparent suicide, according to officials with the North East Independent School District. Shelton said no other student was involved, and no one else is in danger.
