However, Williams stressed that the committee does not have any authority to force the utilities or other entities to make any of those changes. Williams also noted the public’s desire for answers and said the committee would post answers online as it gets them rather than waiting to compile a polished, final report.

Records fell left and right during February's cold snap, but where does it rank historically?

SAN ANTONIO – A small pump wasn’t enough to take out the water that had found its way beneath the floor of Jefferson Community Church, a Deco District landmark, after last week’s winter storms. “After two days, it didn’t look like it had moved at all,” said Pastor Olivia Walker, who had attended the church as a child. When last week’s beautiful blanket of snow that covered the church had melted, it came in through the gaps around the foundation, Walker said. She said the sanctuary was spared, but water covered the floors of storage areas and choir rooms. Its congregation, now with only about 100 members, had already made costly repairs and improvements trying to shore up the building.

Greg Abbott on Saturday held a meeting with other state leaders to discuss the spikes some Texans are seeing in their energy bills following a massive winter storm that prompted dayslong power outages across the state. The meeting came after numerous reports of Texans receiving exorbitant electric bills despite not having power during the storm . The FEMA Region 6 Twitter account posted there is a false phone number being shared with a message about FEMA paying for hotels for Texas Disaster Relief. Staging Management Team Atlanta is scheduled to arrive in Texas on Thursday to give additional support to the state. FEMA said the best information on legitimate sources of help in your area will come from local officials and the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Houston and several surrounding cities are under a boil water notice as many residents are still without running water in their homes. But the crisis was far from over in parts of the South, where many people still lacked safe drinking water. The next phase of the state’s disaster response will be to test drinking water from systems knocked offline by the cold. Power was cut to a New Orleans facility that pumps drinking water from the Mississippi River and generators were used until electricity was restored. Drinking water was made available at fire stations throughout Jackson and officials also planned to set up bottled water pickup sites.

SAN ANTONIO – Outside Gloria Perez’ home in the Highland Park area is a melting snowman, the leftover snow will likely soon be used to wash dishes or flush her family’s toilet. They turn down water. “We filled up containers because that’s all we’re using And and we’re using bottled water to brush your teeth, you know, to wash dishes,” Flores said. The San Antonio Water System announced on Wednesday that a precautionary boil water advisory is in place due to the low water pressure in the area. SAWS shared a map of the areas where they say they have issues pumping water into communities to provide service.

A viral post on social media falsely claimed that SAWS is turning off residents’ water, but that is not true. Ad‼️First, let us correct a rumor: SAWS is NOT going to shut water off to the city. AdOne San Antonio health system said the hospital’s emergency rooms are seeing “a ton” of calls for slips and falls, ranging from minor injuries to concussions to fractures. The San Antonio Fire Department said people heading outside should walk slowly and carefully, and wear boots or other shoes that are slip-resistant if possible. San Antonio and Bexar County officials issued an emergency alert Sunday afternoon, warning residents that many streets and highways would be closed due to the icy conditions.

A storm dropping a wintry mix also sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency -- and some snow! In Houston, officials said Bush Intercontinental Airport runways would remain closed until at least 1 p.m. Tuesday, a day longer than previously expected. The southern Plains had been gearing up for the winter weather for the better part of the weekend.

"Typically, we just don’t have quite this much cold air in place that far south,” said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center. AdChenard said significant ice and up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) of snow were expected across parts of the southern Plains into Monday. Winter weather conditions are affecting large portions of the U.S., but it is rare for them to extend so far south, Chenard said. The airline said the storm was also affecting their flights across the region, with operations reduced and canceled at airports across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Utilities warned of the likelihood for additional power outages due to falling tree limbs.

A sprawling, lumbering winter storm has walloped the Eastern U.S., shutting down coronavirus vaccination sites, closing schools and halting transit. In its second day in the Northeast, a snow storm left nearly 15 inches (38 centimeters) of snow piled up in parts of New Hampshire. The Yale New Haven Health system, which runs several hospitals in southern Connecticut, said its vaccination sites were closed Tuesday and staff were contacting people to reschedule appointments. In New England, nearly 15 inches (38 centimeters) of snow piled up in southeast New Hampshire, and the mountains were getting heavy snow as well. The National Weather Service reported 30 inches of snow fell in parts of Sussex and Morris counties on Monday.

In Switzerland, a skier who had been buried by an avalanche over the weekend died in a hospital of his injuries, authorities said Monday. Temperatures dropped to minus 28 degrees Celsius (minus 18 Fahrenheit) in some Polish areas overnight, the coldest night in 11 years. Just across Poland's southwestern border, the Czech Republic experienced the coldest night this year with temperatures dropping below minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) in many places. In eastern Albania, temperatures dipped as low as minus 13 degrees Celsius (9 Fahrenheit) in Peshkopi, 110 kilometers (70 miles) east of the capital, Tirana. The Nordic region also saw snow and subfreezing temperatures, with the coldest temperatures predictably recorded in the Arctic.

SAN ANTONIO – It’s a January Winter Wonderland! Or at least, that’s how it looks to some Texans across the state who are seeing snowfall on Sunday. KSAT meteorologists reported that parts of the state, specifically Central and Northern Texas, will experience a storm system allowing “some measurable snow to fall.”Parts of Austin, and even closer to San Antonio, parts of the Hill Country have spotted snow flurries. “If you do not have to be on the roads, please don't travel,” said New York Gov. Boston had more than 9 inches of snow early Thursday morning, breaking the previous record for the date of 6.4 inches in 2013. Parts of northern New England saw as much as 7 inches of snow per hour, said Margaret Curtis, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. A rate of 1 inch per hour is typically enough to make it hard for snowplow trucks to keep up. Snow totals topped 3 feet across a wide swath of New Hampshire, and Maine's southernmost county saw 1 to 2 feet.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Snow, sleet and freezing rain were reported Tuesday in parts of the Texas Panhandle as an early season ice storm bore down on the Southern Plains. The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for areas in the Big Country, Concho Valley, the Northern Edwards Plateau and portions of the Heartland. Freezing rain is expected in parts of West Central Texas. Snow was also reported near Amarillo and San Angelo, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department shared images of a snowy Chaprock Canyons State Park near Quitaque. NWS-El Paso also reported snowy conditions in the Borderland, where temperatures were in the upper 20- and low 30-degree range.

SAN ANTONIO – Yep, that was snow some folks saw last night… along with a little bit of sleet or graupel. Yesterday started with cold air and some light rain, and some mixed precipitation way out west. That little disturbance, along with very cold air aloft, squeezed out the leftover moisture, and we had some snow.
