The City of New Braunfels is reminding residents and those visiting the Comal and Guadalupe rivers about its disposable container ordinance ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day weekend will look a little different for visitors as the river levels remain low, but city officials still expect the traditional boom of guests.

Greg Abbott issued an executive order Friday morning that requires all rafting and tubing businesses to close, just ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. “As I said from the start, if the positivity rate rose above 10%, the State of Texas would take further action to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Abbott said Friday. The executive order also states that “transportation of people for the purpose of rafting or tubing” is also prohibited.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – New Braunfels police have temporarily closed a popular tubing area of the Comal River on Monday as overnight storms pushed the debris into the water and the river’s flow to a potentially dangerous speed. “Heavy rains last night have caused an increased flow of water in the Comal River this morning. Overnight, the Comal River flow reached over 500cfs and water went over the Tube Chute Dam. Therefore, the Comal River in New Braunfels is temporarily closed for recreation in order to wait for waters to recede and for minor amounts of debris to be cleaned up. SAN ANTONIO – While restrictions on Texas businesses are easing this weekend, don’t expect to show up at river outfitters for tubes and sunscreen just yet. The City of New Braunfels is advising tubing fans that river outfitters are not allowed to reopen under Texas Gov. Gyms, bars, public swimming pools, bowling alleys, tattoo and piercing parlors, barbershops and salons are also not allowed to open at this time.
