2 accidents, 1 fatal, shut down southbound I-35 in Kyle

KYLE. Texas – Southbound Interstate 35 at Yarrington Road in Kyle, Texas remains closed following two early morning accidents, one a fatal accident, the Kyle Police Department said Friday. 

According to Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett, just after midnight an 18-wheeler struck a pick-up truck from behind that was carrying three male passengers.That vehicle hit an 18-wheeler in front of it, then caught on fire.

“The accident happened in front of several of our officers,” Barnett said. “They assisted in rescue operations until Kyle Fire Department arrived.”

Two of the pickup truck occupants have been taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. A third person died at the scene. The drivers of the 18-wheelers were not injured.

A second multi-vehicle accident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. near mile marker 213 on southbound Interstate 35. At least three 18-wheelers and a pickup truck are involved in this accident. The driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

All southbound lanes of I-35 at Yarrington Road will remain closed for several hours. 

Traffic is presently being diverted onto the access road.
