Off-duty officer rescues woman trapped inside burning crashed car

Flames engulfed car moments later

SAN ANTONIO – A St. Mary’s University police officer was off duty but still in life-saving mode when he rescued a woman from her crashed and burning car early Wednesday.

San Antonio police said the woman lost control of her car on Bandera Road near Evers Road around 3 a.m.

For some reason she lost control of her car and went off the road. It then rolled over into a guardrail and caught fire, police said.

The officer happened to be driving by the area when he noticed the crash scene with two people nearby, recording the sight on their cell phones.

The officer said he asked the bystanders whether anyone was still inside the vehicle.

When he found out the driver was, in fact, still trapped inside, the off duty officer ran to the car and cut the woman’s seat belt in order to free her, police said.

They said he got her out of the vehicle just as the flames reached her feet.

The woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance, suffering from what police described as minor injuries.
