Leon Springs frontage road changes start March 30

Frontage roads between Boerne Stage, Dominion becoming one-way

SAN ANTONIO – Changes are coming next week to the Interstate 10 frontage roads in Leon Springs.

The roads on both sides of the freeway between Boerne Stage Road and Dominion Drive are becoming one-way starting March 30, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Linh Tran has owned a salon and spa in the area for five years. She said customers worry about the upcoming traffic control changes.

"Most of my customers come from Boerne (and) San Antonio, and they're all confused about the streets and direction of how to go," Tran said.

TxDOT San Antonio Spokesman Josh Donat said the changes are a safety measure, and construction is a result of the massive growth in the area. The Leon Springs frontage road changes are just one of four similar projects taking place across the district.

"The first few days, (drivers should) take a few extra minutes," Donat said. "Make sure you get through. We know there's some serious growing pains out there and we're doing everything we can to try and improve those issues."

TxDOT has already changed the frontage road signs off Dominion Drive to say I-10 EB and I-10 WB. Drivers are still using both frontage roads as two-directional until the switch on Wednesday.

Although some call the project inconvenient, Tran and others believe traffic flow will be much safer in the long run.

"I think safety needs to be at the top of the list," traveler Richard Reher said. "I think people are going to have to adjust to those types of changes."

Until TxDOT puts the finishing touches on the roads, each one-way frontage road will be one lane. When all construction in the area is complete, there will be new freeway ramps, frontage roads and stoplights.
