Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run identified

Michael Xaiver Smith, 40, was killed while walking on Woodstone Dr, police say

SAN ANTONIOUpdated at 4:51 p.m.:

The victim was identified as Michael Xaiver Smith, 40.

Original story:

San Antonio police said the search is on for a driver that hit and killed a pedestrian late Wednesday night on the city's Northwest Side.

The accident was reported around 9:30 p.m. on Woodstone Drive near Vance Jackson Road.

Police said the 40-year-old pedestrian was walking in the middle of the street and appeared to be staggering, possibly drunk according to witnesses.

The man stumbled before two eastbound cars went around him, but a third vehicle ran over him, police said. Emergency crews responded to the scene and took the man to University Hospital where he later died.

Investigators said the car that hit him slowed but immediately fled and turned north onto Vance Jackson Road. A witness tried to follow but could only describe the vehicle as a 2005 Red Ford Mustang.

The name of the man killed has not been released by authorities pending notification of next of kin.
