FLORESVILLE, Texas – Floresville is breathing a big sigh of relief Sunday after the city managed to avoid major flooding.
Heavy rains Saturday evening and into Sunday morning left some streets and roads flooded, but homes and businesses mostly dodged the flooding bullet.
Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said crews responded to about 30 or 40 high water rescues during the worst of the rains.
Sunday morning Floresville City Manager Henrietta Turner toured the area with city crews searching for damage, but came away relieved the town had missed most of the flooding.
She says they found only one home with minor water damage, and a few businesses also with minor damage.
A Red Cross shelter set up to accommodate flood victims was closed at noon Sunday because no one had showed up.
Mayor Sherry Castillo said the city wastewater treatment plant was a concern, but an assessment by a city crew showed that facility also had avoided flood damage.
The city manager says Floresville will be watching some area water crossing to see if there is any rise.
