Special-needs adults rescued from van stuck in flooded stream

Passengers OK after rescue at NW Military Highway, George Road

SAN ANTONIO – Four special-needs adults were rescued Monday morning from a van that got stuck in floodwaters on the city's Northwest Side.

Rescue crews were called out at 8:10 a.m. to a flooded stream at Military Highway and George Road, San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Woody Woodward said.

"The van was moving. There was some fear this van could possibly run into a pole," Woodward said.

In addition to rescue crews working with a floating vehicle, Woodward said the rescue attempt was complicated because of the special-needs passengers.

"We did have some special-needs folks inside of this van. We're going to be careful, and we're going to do it right," Woodward said.

Rescue crews spent about 40 minutes extracting the passengers, who were not injured, Woodward said.

After the rescue, barricades were placed on the road to alert drivers to the flooded road.
