PORT ARANSAS, Texas – Port Aransas fell victim to Hurricane Harvey’s massive force of destruction.
The city wasn’t hit by the eye of the storm, but the damage was severe.
City Manager David Parsons said 95 percent of the population took heed to the mandatory evacuation the mayor ordered Thursday morning.
Officials said those who ignored orders to leave were escorted out when first responders went door to door to assess the damage.
The emergency operations center showed the only signs of life in the city Saturday. It’s where first responders from all over South Texas convened.
The city manager said he’s unsure when it will be safe for people to return to their homes. He said crews will have to ensure there are no gas leaks, dangerous electrical wires or sewage backups.
Parsons said there is a chance that cell service may return Sunday.
