Study: Toyota responsible for 1 in every 200 jobs in Texas

Carmaker has plant in San Antonio, U.S. HQ in North Texas

SAN ANTONIO – A recent study has confirmed what many in South Texas already knew, the opening of the Toyota plant here in San Antonio has had a major impact on the city.

Toyota has also made strides in the overall Texas economy, with $2.6 billion invested over 14 years.

The recent study was done by the Center for Automotive Research or CAR.

According to the study, in 2015, one out of every 200 workers in Texas were employed as a result of Toyota.

This includes Toyota's manufacturing, sales, logistics and support operations.

It also shows that Toyota's Texas employees earned a total of $1.9 billion.

Here in San Antonio, the new community reports shows that Toyota Motor Manufacturing has more than 3,000 employees and produced 261,000 new Tundra and Tacoma trucks.

Richard Perez, CEO & president of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, said Toyota has also done a fantastic job getting executives involved in the chamber and the community.

"The chamber functions because we have executives that care, get involved and want to do things and in particular, had a focus on workforce development," Perez said. "Now we are doing so many things in the workforce-development realm and we're making a difference and I can clearly say and point right to Toyota as a factor."

Perez said that attracting Toyota to the Alamo City was not only a strategic win but, “The CAR report is a clear indication that the dollars we spent years ago really has reaped a huge benefit going forward and will continue to."

"The CAR report just continues to enforce Toyota's commitment to San Antonio and the state of Texas," said Dave Crouch, vice president of Administration and Production Control Toyota Manufacturing Texas. "When you think of an economic impact of $1.9 billion in payroll alone that's huge and we're glad to be here."

Toyota is also investing a $1 billion in Plano for a new U.S. headquarters that will eventually employ 4,000 people.

In the United States, CAR found that for every one manufacturing-related Toyota job 6.1 other jobs are supported. National numbers in 2015 were as follows:

Total employment impact of 470,100 jobs

U.S. employment supports $32.3 billion in private non-farm payroll income

Charitable giving totals $700 million to U.S. nonprofits since 1996

Toyota manufactures 12 vehicles in the U.S., as well as engines, transmissions and components.
