People getting ready to cash in on tax-free weekend

Savings apply to online retailers as well

SAN ANTONIO – Students across the state are getting ready to head back to class and for many parents this is an expensive time of the year.

While there are obvious financial incentives for parents to take advantage of this weekend’s tax-free shopping, they aren’t the only ones.

To say Calias and Michael Newman are excited would be an understatement.

The pair are expecting their first child soon and already taking advantage of the tax-free weekend.

"It's the first baby girl born in our family in the last 15 years,” Calais Newman said. “So we are starting from scratch."

Items eligible to be tax free range from diapers and clothes to school supplies --- but there is a price limit. Items over $100 don’t qualify for a discount.

While this isn’t their first rodeo, the tax holiday began in 1999, businesses across the Alamo City are preparing for a busy weekend. Target expects to see 30 percent more customers than it normally does.

"It's all hands on deck,” store associate James Ellis said. “We want to make sure all of our team members are here to help guests. We not only have them here, but we put them in the right areas where customers will be shopping."

They are ready for back to school --- even having local schools check lists --- and special training for their employees

"We are making sure our team members are very trained making sure they know all of the schools in the area, when they go back because we have different schools that go back at different times," Ellis said.

But brick and mortar stores are not the only places customers can save.
