SAN ANTONIO – A former San Antonio police officer was shot Thursday evening and a woman was taken into custody in connection with that shooting, a Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
The shooting happened around 7:50 p.m. at a home in the 9100 block of Arroyo Hondo, in Northwest Bexar County.
Sheriff's spokesman James Keith said Jackie Neal, 41, got into an argument with a 47-year-old woman identified as Sandra Diaz, his long-term girlfriend who lived with him at the home.
Keith said the woman shot Neal in the throat. He was taken to University Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Keith said Neal is expected to survive.
Keith said a child was home at the time of the shooting, but was uninjured.
Diaz has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and serious bodily injury family dating.
Diaz remains in the Bexar County Jail. Her bond has been set at $100,000.
Sexual assault arrest
Neal was an 11-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department before being charged with sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman during a traffic stop in 2013.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the woman said she was handcuffed and was outside by the trunk of Neal's vehicle during the sexual assault.
Neal was on duty, in full uniform and in a marked patrol car when he sexually assaulted the woman, the affidavit said.
Former San Antonio police Chief William McManus said at the time of Neal's arrest that another woman had made an accusation against Neal a couple of years prior, then refused to cooperate.
He said Neal had recently been suspended for three days and transferred to South Patrol for fraternization. McManus said Neal violated department policy by dating an 18-year-old woman who was in the Explorers program for young people interested in law enforcement careers.
Center of lawsuit
The 19-year-old woman Neal was accused of assaulting filed a federal lawsuit against him and the city seeking $10 million.
The San Antonio City Council will consider settling that lawsuit for $500,000 next week.
San Antonio Police spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar said Thursday night that Neal is on indefinite suspension, "which is tantamount to a termination."
