"Our hope is strong but tempered for Brad, who remains in critical condition. He has had the first skin graft surgery of many that will follow, and he came through it well. He remains under heavy sedation and is still on a breathing machine as his wounds are treated and allowed time to heal. Brad has a long journey ahead of him, and we are comforted by the knowledge that the entire city is pulling for him and praying for us all," Phipps' wife Tina said.
Phipps is what is known as a legacy firefighter, meaning his father was also a firefighter.
"He's definitely a fighter. And we're praying to God that Brad's fighting spirit will help him pull through and overcome his injuries," Tina continued.
She also expressed her gratitude to the hospital staff of San Antonio Military Medical Center in a statement, saying, “They have worked feverishly to keep Brad alive. While he remains in critical condition, we are hopeful. So thank you all and thank you, San Antonio.”
