SAN ANTONIO – A historical tribute is now on display on the city’s East Side.
A mural titled “Ellis Alley: The Cradle of East Side Culture” was unveiled at a celebration of the San Antonio landmark that now serves as a small office area near the VIA Metropolitan Transit Park & Ride Center in the 200 block of Chestnut Street.
The mural helps visitors learn about the contributions of early east San Antonio residents, business owners, educators, politicians and entrepreneurs who helped shape the area and city.
“This was really the first settlements of African-Americans here in San Antonio,” said Jackie Gorman, SAGE CEO. “This area, Ellis Alley, actually became a collection of old buildings and so the murals help tell the history that is based here.”
Dr. Anne Toxey created the mural through a partnership between VIA, the San Antonio Conservation Society and San Antonio for Growth on the East Side (SAGE).
