SAN ANTONIO – Genene Jones, the so-called "killer nurse," was indicted on Wednesday by a Bexar County grand jury in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl.
Jones is charged with murder in connection with the Sept. 16, 1981, slaying of Rosemary Vega, the Bexar County District Attorney's Office said in a news release.

The grand jury recommended a $1 million bail for the charge.
District Attorney Nico LaHood said while such an old case can prove challenging to prosecute, he is confident in the evidence.
“The evidence we presented was legal and ethical and we believe it will show Ms. Jones is guilty of murder,” he said. “That's why we've taken our time. We did not react. We've done our due diligence, we have a strong team working on this case, we've thought of all the legal issues.”
LaHood spoke to the Vega family.
“I think that they both can say they don't think this day would ever come,” he said of their conversation. “So it's bitter sweet because they still have been cheated out of a life with their precious baby yet they're hoping she will be held accountable.”
This is the second murder indictment returned against Jones in the past month. In late May, a grand jury indicted her in connection with the Dec. 12, 1981, death of 11-month-old Joshua Sawyer.
Jones is currently serving time in prison for several murder and injury-to-a-child convictions that occurred in the mid-1980s. Due to a law in effect at the time Jones was sentenced, she is scheduled to be released from prison in March 2018.

But prior to her mandatory release, Jones will be extradited to Bexar County to await trial on the new charges, the DA's Office said.
District Attorney Nico LaHood plans to hold a news conference on Wednesday afternoon to address the lastest indictment against Jones.
