Deceased suspect in case of slain police officer identified, had criminal past

Suspect identified as 34-year-old Andrew Bice

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday identified the man, now deceased, who police said killed a San Antonio police officer and injured another as 34-year-old Andrew Bice.

Police said Bice opened fire on officers Miguel Moreno, 32, and Julio Cavazos, 36, when they approached him in the 200 block of Evergreen Street Thursday afternoon.

Police Chief William McManus said the officers approached two men while investigating car burglaries in the area when Bice opened fire on the officers, striking Moreno in the head and Cavazos in the chin.

Moreno died from his wounds Friday.

McManus said Cavazos dragged Moreno out of the line of fire and returned fire, striking the Bice in the buttocks. The medical examiner ruled Bice's death a suicide.

Police have not yet released any other information on the two men, but said the man that survived is no longer a suspect in the shooting and was cooperative with investigators, telling authorities they had come from Louisiana. The surviving man was arrested on outstanding warrants, but has since been released.

Online records show Bice had previous charges including assault causing bodily injury against a family member, possession of a controlled substance and evading arrest.

Bice's last known address is in the San Antonio area, however, the current resident told our reporter they have lived at that address for the last three years and does not know Bice.
