SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Department of Transportation has launched a statewide campaign to make drivers aware of the importance of slowing down in work zones.
TxDOT is asking drivers to pay close attention to construction crews and equipment on roadways.
The campaign comes during National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs through Friday.
The department says drivers need to be patient while driving through work zones, even if there are delays.
More than 100 people die in approximately 15,000 crashes each year in Texas highway construction and maintenance zones, according to the TxDOT website.
Drivers should also expect the unexpected while behind the wheel. TxDOT said to be on the lookout for things like uneven pavement, narrow lanes and concrete barricades.
State law mandates that motorists move over or slow down for TxDOT or emergency vehicles with flashing lights.
