Tony Parker undergoes surgery to repair ruptured quadriceps tendon

San Antonio Spurs guard injured during Game 2 of semifinals against Rockets

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Spurs star point guard Tony Parker underwent surgery Friday morning to repair a ruptured left quadriceps tendon, the team announced in a statement.

Parker was injured Wednesday in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Houston Rockets after exploding to the basket off his left leg for a signature teardrop.

The 34-year-old Spurs veteran went down with fewer than 9 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Video captured by KSAT showed Parker being carried of the court by teammates Dewayne Dedmon and Dejounte Murray to an awaiting wheelchair near the Spurs locker room. 

The procedure to repair Parker's injury was performed by Spurs team physician Dr. David R. Schmidt.

An emotional Patty Mills said shortly after Game 2 it was a sunken feeling to see Parker go down but guys are ready to step up for the upcoming games in Houston.

Parker, who is in his 16th year with the Spurs, will sit out the rest of the Spurs' postseason run. The team said a timeline for Parker's return will be announced at a later date.

It is unclear who will start at the point guard position in Game 3 with backup Mills and rookie Murray having started for Parker during the 19 games he missed in the regular season.

The San Antonio Spurs travel to Houston to take on the Rockets in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at 8:30 pm CT.
