Six years later, Sanchez, the founder of Sam’s Covers, has continued to create and donate fleece blankets to children living in emergency shelters. Sanchez said that after meeting with several of the children living at area shelters, she’s hoping to help in another way. “Talking to them for a few hours and learning about their background, It’s so important to listen and be present,” Sanchez said. On Monday she donated 150 blankets for children living at Roy Maas Youth Alternatives Emergency Shelters and has no plans of stopping.

Jones, who has been home from Vietnam since February, began volunteering at her fathers youth basketball camp, Shooting for Success, in March. Ive been here the entire time 7:30am helping the kids out, making sure theyre not only learning basketball skills, but also life skills, Jones said. Jones, whose mother Diane is half-Vietnamese, left the NCAA to join the Vietnamese national team in 2019 becoming the first Vietnamese-American to make the squad. She is hoping to build the teams basketball competencies and help the team finish well in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games.

This year, the Reagan High School Marching Band’s summer camp was not only virtual, it became an “all star master class” taught by professional musicians, and even a dancer. "Between the three band directors, we knew almost all of these people and were able to connect with them," Morrison said. Using funds from its budget that in the past paid for competition fees, food, travel and other band expenses, Morrison said the professional musicians were paid their typical hourly rate. It was well worth it, he said, given the caliber of talent that has been working with nearly all 350 Reagan High School band members.

Carsten was coached by John Hirst and Chans Chapman at Reagan in baseball and baseball, respectively, and both coaches said Carsten’s work ethic allowed him to be such a successful multisport athlete. “I think he’s a great player. I think he’s got a really high ceiling,” said Hirst. Carsten decommitted from playing baseball at Tulane in December but the 6-8 right-handed pitcher knew his physical attributes could still make a bigger difference in baseball.
