A full-circle moment on Tuesday for some local student-athletes

SAN ANTONIO – On Tuesday, East Central High School honored four student-athletes who signed their letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level.

Mariana Medrano-Sanchez will stay close to home as the soccer stand-out signed her letter of intent to Our Lady of the Lake University.

“It’s really exciting; I’ve been dreaming of this day since the first day I came to high school,” Medrano-Sanchez said.

For Samantha Melendez, she’s excited to venture to the midwest as the soccer star made her commitment to Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa.

“I wasn’t thinking to go and play soccer in college,” said Melendez. “But, I guess the passion, and God sent the opportunity for me, and I took it.”

Lauren Quintero, a cheerleader, made a rare signing day commitment. She will take her school spirit and talents to Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

“College is something that I’ve always been very set on and that I want to go. I want to continue to further my education,” expressed Quintero.

Emery Espinoza inked her letter of intent to play basketball in her home state at the University of Texas at Dallas.

“It’s really exciting, my family, we haven’t really had this before — so it’s something new and something to experience with everybody,” said Espinoza.
